A lot of people talk about "rural medicine", but what really defines rural when it comes to medicine? <100k popultion? <50k? <10k? The practical definition of rural I have in mind is the point at which a community starts to have family medicine doctors do more and more things that would be exclusive or almost exclusive to specialists in major metro areas (OBGYN, emerg, hospitalist, etc). So I guess I am really wondering at what size of community this starts to happen in Canada.

I saw someone do this last year and thought it was very interesting and figured I might as well start one this year Answers are anonymous! Last year they differentiated between the non-rural and rural seats so I did the same- even though we don't really get to choose what seat we get haha, but I'm assuming it was pertaining to whether you filled out the rural section and think you may have a high RRSS. In addition, if anyone would like to speak to why they are choosing such in the comments I think that could be interesting too

Hi all, Anyone in the Northern Medical Program or interested in it? I live in North Vancouver and I go to Dalhousie (Halifax) and I don't have any experience living in a rural community, yet I really, really want to. Should I try and spend summers in a rural community working, volunteering or researching? Or am I wasting my time and money because I don't have a chance anyway? I know that big cities are not my thing and I want my career to be as rewarding as possible and rural communities are so desperate for doctors. I would love to help the doctor shortage up north by relocating there permanently after my MD. Has anyone been accepted? Where have you lived and what kind of experience do you have? Any other info on the program is helpful too :) Thank you!

Would having lived in another country rurally (literally in the bush) for 4 months enable me to apply for consideration? The entry forms for Canadian residency locations don't allow you to enter non-Canadian addresses so this wouldn't work for me... by that reasoning alone I'm assuming no? But the following section apparently does allow non-Canadian activities to be entered. Apart from this 4 months I have lived in cities... Thanks in advance...

If you are not from a rural area, but have work or volunteer experience (such as clinical in my case) in a rural area, can you still qualify for rural attributes?

Hey guys, so I'm IP BC. Wondering if I work for 6-8 months rurally within Ontario or Alberta whether I'd qualify for Ontario or Alberta residency and rural considerations? If I got Ontario/Alberta residency, do I get to keep my BC IP one if I'm back in BC and working by April / May next year? I will simultaneously be doing online schoolwork out of BC universities. What would be decent, competitive IP stats for Ontario and Alberta? How many weeks out of each month, or months out of the year would I be required to live/work in either place in order to get my residency? Am I better off aiming for Alberta residency rather than Ontario? Thanks
