  1. I'm a pharmacy student who, two-thirds of the way through pharmacy school, developed the strong desire to pursue medicine instead. I still really enjoy pharmacy (it was my first love after all) but feel like I would never find closure if I didn't at least try to pursue medicine. I definitely plan on finishing my pharmD first so I am not applying for medical school until that is done first. However, I figured I should start preparing and have been looking through the admission requirements for Canadian medical schools recently. Specifically, I realize that Western looks specifically at only the best 2 undergraduate years, and those 2 undergraduate years must meet the 3.7 GPA. My grades consistenly exceeded the 3.7 cutoff during my three years of undergrad, but they dropped significantly in the first 2 years of pharmacy school. I just finished third year and was able to get > 3.7 GPA this year. However, I only have 1 year in pharmacy where I meet the 3.7 cutoff and I am starting full-time rotations in fourth year so I will no longer be able to get another 3.7 GPA. I'm just wondering if Western would also look at my undergrad year grades. I know they say that people pursuing a second degree would have their best 2 years chosen from the second degree. However since I didn't actually finish my bachelor's before transferring to pharmacy, would Western include those years as part of the requirements to complete my pharmacy degree and choose another year from there to calculate GPA? Or, do they actually not look at any undergrad year, solely calculate from my pharmacy years and I might as well not bother applying to this particular school.
  2. Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well I'd really appreciate some perspectives on my chances at Western and Queens specifically! MCAT: 514 (127/127/128/132) 2YGPA: 3.87 Thanks in advance!!
  3. Hey guys - just realized I may have screwed my chances at medical school. I applied to queens and western. My third and fourth years are the 3.88 and 3.87 respectively. I did a fifth year in 2020 and took three courses, which was my biggest, dumbest mistake because I ended up with a calculated 3.5 gpa here. I am terrified Queens will take this year and my fourth year as my last two, leaving me at a 3.68 gpa. Have I screwed myself over?
  4. Hey guys, congrats to those who have finished the application process! I know this is a super redundant post, but if anyone could tell me what my chances are looking like, I would really, really appreciate it... if I'm headed for rejections, I hope to be able to prepare myself for them. MCAT is 514: 127/127/128/132 2YGPA: 3.88 (cumulative is 3.61) My extracurriculars are strong - awards, president of large non profit, accessibility research, etc. I've applied to Western, Queens and Mac... any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
  5. Hello everyone, This is my first post on premed101, how exciting! I'm thinking about sending the U of T/Western/Queens/Dalhousie admissions committee a letter regarding the recent announcement that Winter 2020 grades will not be used in GPA calculations this year, and for all subsequent years. I understand that some students have been subject to unfair grading, and would prefer this term not count due to these unforeseen circumstances. However, it hardly seems fair to say point blank that no student's Winter 2020 semester will count as a result. I do have a personal gripe with this decision because I did much better in my fourth year than in any other years, and without my Winter 2020 grades I will hardly be competitive. Ideally, I'd like to see a system where GPA is calculated with/without the winter 2020 semester and the higher one be taken. Or that students are given an option on OMSAS where they can select whether or not they'd like the last semester included (given that every applicant probably knows whether or not Winter 2020 will help or harm their GPA) Does anyone else feel similarly? Do you think sending a letter is a smart choice? (Note: I'd be happy to post my draft here, or email it to anyone who'd like to look it over). I really can't tell if I'm justified in my upset with all this. Thanks everyone, T
  6. So, I heard that an A (80-89%) at York University which converts to a 3.8 on OMSAS is a 4.0 when converted to Amcas. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this. Thanks
  7. Hello, I have recently completed my 4th year of studies (and not yet graduated). This year was pretty good and I got a annual gpa of 3.725. I am thinking about completing a 5th year before graduation so that I can fulfill Western's gpa requirements. Here are some of my stats: 4TH YEAR GPA= 3.725 5TH YEAR GPA= HOPEFULLY 3.9 ish. My previous 3 years did not go so well and hence I have a cumulative gpa of less than 3.0. I wrote the MCAT earlier this year and got marks that were well above the cuttoff. Considering that I have 1 year that meets the gpa requirement as well as a good MCAT score, do I have any chance getting a conditional offer from Western? I will hopefully finish with a good 5th year gpa. Also... When they calculate my gpa for admission will it be cumulative in the sense that they will add both gpa's for my 4th and 5th year. I know that each individual year needs to be above the cuttoff and I understand that completely, but my question is how can they calculate an applicants entering gpa when they consider it separately, like 3.725 and 3.90? So will it be more like 3.725+3.9= and that is the gpa they calculate for admission? Would appreciate feedback. Thank you
