How are my EC's/Awards

Recommended Posts

Your high school ECs look solid and you'll be able to use them for Ontario schools (and some other schools). You've checked off the research/scholar box already pretty well, so I think you'd be okay to focus more time on grades/MCAT, which are important! At the same time I don't know what your GPA situation is and if it is something you need to start paying more attention to. If you're able to diversify your ECs in terms of clubs etc, that would also be beneficial since schools like to know about your interests through your activities. But that should come second to academics if it isn't something you're able to handle at the moment. In terms of covering the CANMEDS, only you can decide if you have met them. It depends on your takeaways from each activity and may not necessarily be obvious from the type of activity.

From my viewpoint, what you are missing are actual contributions to your community and demonstrating compassion, understanding and empathy (and long term), e.g., helping children or adults in crisis at Big Brother, Big Sister or a food bank, etc. Any interest in music, sports, tutoring kids. Show whom you are as a well rounded, interesting and active member of the community.

Your GPA seems fine so it's not that you have to re-prioritize your life, but remember you can still improve it drastically since you're only in first year. If you have to pick and choose, I would lay off activities you're already strong in and do some ECs in volunteering, as Bambi pinpointed.

I meant that Ontario schools accept activities from high school. UBC does too if I remember correctly. But other schools will only want to know about your post-secondary ECs so you have to evaluate whether you cover the CANMED roles in both cases
