UWO 5th year/ Special year policy.

Recommended Posts

So I am starting a 5th year of Undergrad in this fall. Will this year be treated as a "special year" even though I have not graduated from the program? Technically, I am still registered as a 4th year

undergrad student in my university. Also, UWO has a policy for "special year" where certain number of courses must be at the 200 level. Do I need to follow that even though I am not considered a

"special year" student in my university.

Any help is appreciated!

Since you are still registered in your program and have not graduated, you will be treated like a 4th year and have to meet the 3/5 rule. "If you do a 5th year of study prior to graduating, 3 of 5 full course equivalents must be at the 3rd year-level or above (as for the fourth year)" https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/medicine/undergraduate/future_students/faq.html

You are not considered a special student. A special student is one who is not enrolled in a degree program but elects to take university credits for whatever reason. This year is considered differently with the 2nd year course limitations. "A special year will only be considered if it contains five full or equivalent courses (30 credit hours) taken between September and April. First‑year courses, repeat/antirequisite courses, pass/fail courses and second‑year courses that do not require a first‑year prerequisite are not acceptable in the special year." https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/medicine/undergraduate/future_students/admission/application_process.html

I wish UWO's website posted this info in the same location. If in doubt, you should contact admissions to make sure what you are doing meets their requirements. Goodluck :)

EDIT: Sorry, I thought you posted this in the premed forums. I'm not sure how dentistry works, definitely check all over their websites and contact them. Hopefully someone else has more information.
