Core CTU Letter Required for IM Applications?

Recommended Posts

My dilemma is that I asked for a letter from my attending on core CTU and they agreed but it seems that this letter will just be "okay". At my feedback session they basically told me that I am at the level that is expected for a student at my level and that there are no real concerns. However, during my internal medicine subspecialty rotation at my school, I clicked really well with my attending and they told me that I am "one of the strongest clinical clerks they have worked with". Would it look like a red flag if I use this subpsec letter instead of my core CTU letter when I apply to other schools for IM residency? How necessary is it to use my core CTU letter? For what it's worth, neither of these 2 attendings have much weight in the admissions committee and both would be pretty much unknown at other schools. My core CTU attending was also a subspecialist just covering CTU for some time.

Any advice from experienced residents would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Your MSI4 elective letter is probably worth more than your core MSI3 CTU/MTU/GIM rotation letter.  Most i know didn't even get any letters from 3rd year core rotations.
