Coldery
How ill-advised is it to switch universities going into one's third year? I know there are implications in terms of having to discontinue volunteering experiences and the lack of effect enrolling in a more prestigious program has in the eyes of the adcoms. However, is having to discontinue volunteer positions really that bad if they already did some volunteering in their first two years and are planning on doing more for the next two? I say this because I hear that adcoms tend to value commitment to volunteer positions highly such that 200 hours in 1 activity is seen as more important than 100 hours in 2 separate activities. For reference, my friend is currently enrolled in a general degree program at the UofC and is planning on transferring into the UWO BMSC program. Meridian
Why are they wanting to switch Universities ? I hope it is not solely thinking the BMSC program would help for Med Applications. It really does not matter. It should not hurt medical school applications as long as GPA can be held up and full course-load is maintained. Some things to think about. Will switching programs then require a fifth year to complete the new program ? Would they need to pick up some 1st and 2nd year prerequisites in their 3rd and 4th year to fulfill degree requirements. Be careful to not violate some med schools course level requirements in upper years. The EC transition should not be an issue as long as they pick up some new ECs at UWO. It doesn't make much of a difference, but why not just stay in Calgary, if ur GPA is good, at least you get IP in Calgary. Unless the person is from Alberta originally and would be getting IP in Ontario by going to UWO. Also, UWO Med Sci is not a prestigious program in the eyes of adcoms.
