SerpentineNino Posted January 26, 2019 Report Share Posted January 26, 2019 Hi guys, I have a question for anyone who’s familiar with internal med candidate selection: for an IMG who’s interested in applying to internal med, is a CTU rotation necessary as an elective? I couldn’t get a CTU rotation but I got 2 subspeciality rotations 2 weeks each. Is that sufficient or have my chances been eliminated by not having a CTU elective or reference letter? Edict Posted January 27, 2019 Report Share Posted January 27, 2019 Its not eliminated, but I do find subspecialty rotations worse for a few reasons. 1. Harder to impress since subspecialists deal with their subspecialty, are used to having subspecialty residents and IM residents as opposed to med students 2. Subspecialists are less likely, although not never, to be involved in medicine and IM resident selection and they may not be as well known amongst the IM community With that being said, it is very possible to match via subspecialty electives and you should do the same things you would normally do. good luck Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Im a first year preclinical student at UdeM and im thinking about applying to internal medicine in 3 years. Im starting slowly to see what are my options in order to have a good application! Clinical Teaching Unit(CTU), also known as Medical Teaching Unit (MTU), is where you have a team of attending, senior residents, junior residents and medical students functioning to take care of a ward of internal medicine admitted patients and covering emergency room consults.
