Notra
I'm a second year student in another province and I'd like to spend the summer in Toronto doing some clinical experiences. In my province we have opportunities to get matched up with preceptors and spend a couple weeks working with them in clinic, sort of as preparation for clerkship. I've been looking for something similar in Ontario but it seems like opportunities differ quite a bit amongst Ontario medical schools. Could anyone share with me what sorts of opportunities are available for students through the U of T? Pre-clerkship electives, shadowing, etc? Thanks for any help! It's very difficult to find anything clinical in Toronto as a student from another school. Your best bet would be to find a research supervisor who is also a clinician and hope they'll let you observe every now and then (this is also extremely unlikely and difficult). I think you should just stay at your home school and use the program there.
robclem21
To be honest, i'm not sure how many "formal" opportunities there are for shadowing during the summers. Most of those programs that are solely observership occur during the academic year, and most during the summer are accompanied by some sort of research component. These are also usually exclusive to UofT students. Most hospitals have summer research programs where you might be able to swing your way into shadowing a little bit. UofT doesn't do pre-clerkship electives. I'll also echo above. Unless you want a super competitive specialty, enjoy your summer. Go travel and worry about clerkship in the fall. There is more than enough time to spend in the hospital.
Notra
Thanks for your replies! There are some specialties that fall later in my rotation schedule next year (i.e. I will have to be choosing my electives before I do those rotations) so I'd like to rule those specialties in or out this summer. I plan to travel a bit, but otherwise the way I would most enjoy my summer would be to shadow different physicians in Ontario! That's too bad it is difficult to find clinical opportunities. I'll keep trying and see if I can get lucky!
