finnatrynabeadoctor
Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of the relative competitiveness of the anesthesia residency programs in Canada. I assume for most specialties it's a similar pattern, but I would appreciate if anyone could give me some insight for anesthesia in particular. I've heard mixed things; I've heard UOttawa and UManitoba are up there, but I would have assumed Toronto/McGill were the more competitive programs. Does anyone know which are generally the most sought-after, and for what reasons? Thanks a lot!
robclem21
By the time you get to that stage, more people are looking at personal factors (location, family, significant others, affordability, etc.) and less at the actual characteristics of the program. Most programs across Canada are similar and all of them will provide an exceptional training. Everyone has their own reasons for ranking various programs the way they do. All spots were filled after the first iteration this year, and I imagine the overall match statistics should be similar to last year with about 0.7 spots per applicant. No center is consistently on top for all residencies.

Now you’re thinking like a Toronto/McGill resident! Bcemslayer

And despite having great programs in some cases, the cities are also very unattractive for many... (i.e. completely unaffordable). hero147
People usually rank programs according to their location, distance from family etc.... But if you were to rank things, Ottawa is probably the most competitive. Manitoba and Dal also have very good programs, but likely suffer due to their location.
