Anyone know if the essays and CASPer were a new thing this year for U of T dentistry, or if they were always a part of the application process?

If they’re new, why were they added this year?

Yes, the essays and CASPer were both additions to UofT's application this year.

From what I understand, they are trying to take a more holistic approach that considers extracurriculars and experience rather than solely basing decisions on GPA and DAT scores in hopes to invite more well-rounded and prepared students. Although it's not known if or how these additions are being included in decisions this year, or if because they are too new, they are perhaps just being used as a trial.

In any case, good luck to everyone :)

Last year they came out around 1:30pm

On their website they say "... via e-mail based on their potential as shown by their academic achievement and DAT scores." does this mean essays and capser scores aren't considered for this stage of the admission process?

why wouldn’t they be?

Could be a trial run. Other universities have used Casper without factoring it in to admissions then see if the Casper scores correlate to achievement for that cohort in the coming years. If they find the students that did better on Casper are doing better in school or are performing better in social settings for example then they might decide to make it count for admissions.

Edit: Same idea for essays.

Because their website states that interviews will be based on "academic achievement and DAT scores".

I'm not sure though. It could be a mistake (forgetting to update the wording from last year)

Interesting..... on their website they updated the final selection criteria to include CASPer and essays:

Final offers for admission to the DDS program will be made to selected members of this group of interviewed applicants, and will be based upon academic achievement, DAT scores, CASPer test scores, essays, and the results of the interview process

But according to the website interview selection is still based solely on grades and DAT. I think they may be using the new criteria for the final selection process and not for the interview selection, but we'll see about that soon!

that doesn’t make much sense. It should be everything for an interview, then the interview to select from interviewees based on the interview
