  • 2 weeks later...

I guess there was a wave today?!

TIME STAMP: 1:35pm EST

Interview Date (MD or MD/PhD): March 1st, 2020 (MD)

Result: Invite

wGPA:  3.96

MCAT: 517

ECs: Diverse and strong I think. However, they weren't good enough to get UBC or Calgary OOP. PM for details.

Essays: I thought about them for most of the Summer, but didn't start until a few days before the deadline. After making mistakes with these essays in previous cycles, I think what helped me this year is making sure that my essays were actually personal and demonstrated that I learned something from the experiences I discussed in them.

Year: Second year MSc. So I suppose I'm in the graduate stream

Geography: IP

After a MCAT rewrite and four straight rejections this cycle, it's a blessing  to be given the opportunity to interview at my dream med school! Best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear back about interviews!

TIME STAMP:  1:35 pm (30-Jan-2020)

Interview Date (MD or MD/PhD): March 1st, 2020 (MD)

Result: Invite

wGPA:  wGPA: 3.99

MCAT: 510 (129,126,129,126)

ECs: Nothing crazy. To date: 3 years of hospital volunteering that involves a lot of communication with families and staff, over a year of tutoring immigrant youth for a few hours a week, a ton of research with a first-author publication (not a big journal), mentorship of several undergrads on my project, OGS x2, NSERC-USRA x2, teaching assistant with lots of stuff to talk about.

Essays: Spent about 5 weeks on these and the Western ones (mostly weekends). Kept the can-meds/clusters in mind and had a structured way of writing with reflection. Had many people review them, but they could have been improved a bit with more time, especially my choice of life experiences to include. I don't think these were necessarily a strong part of my application.

Year: MSc yr 2

Geography: IP

TIME STAMP: 1:55pm (EST) Jan 30th

Interview Date (MD or MD/PhD): Feb 29 (MD)

Result: Invite‼!

cGPA/wGPA:  3.96/3.98

MCAT: above cutoffs (I guess that’s obvious)

ECs: NSERC, other undergrad research and pubs, exec of various clubs in both my undergrad and masters, TA during undergrad, event coordinator for welcome week at university department. event first aid jobs, photography. I did stuff that I was interested in and where life took me; I didn't stress myself to get "ideal" ECs because I know I'd hate it

Essays: reflected a lot before writing them; I ended up having a lot of examples from experiences during my MSc for both the 4 essays and the ABS. I used specifics of how I felt, what I did, and how my decisions impacted the results I obtained.

Year: finished course-based MSc in Sept 2019, finished undergrad in 2017

Geography: IP - GTA

After rejections from mac and Ottawa, I was expecting this rejection in March. I feel so blessed!
