Delivery method of pre-clerkship during COVID

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking to understand how COVID has impacted the delivery method of medical education to pre-clerks across Canada (I'm a pre-clerk myself). I'd like to have data from every Canadian medical school, so I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to fill in my short survey below.

School:

Year (1 or 2):

Lecture delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]):

Shadowing/clinic visits delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]):

Clinician skills delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]):

Research delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]):

If your school has other components of pre-clerkship, please feel free to add them to the list.

Thanks in advance!

School: USask

Year (1 or 2): 1

Lecture delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Online (mix of pre-recorded and live)

Shadowing/clinic visits delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): In-person, though it was suspended for a bit in between. Also, only few specialities are currently open for shadowing.

Clinician skills delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Online introduction + in-person practice sessions (at least twice a week)

Research delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Don't really have a dedicated research module. Most people I know who have approached others for research have mostly an in-person approach.

If your school has other components of pre-clerkship, please feel free to add them to the list: We have in-person anatomy labs in addition to the clinicals.

School: Mcgill

Year (1 or 2): 1

Lecture delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Online with a mix of live and old recordings from 2019 (depends on the unit). Anatomy labs have been reduced to 25% in person, 75% digital learning.

Shadowing/clinic visits delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Dedicated family medicine shadowing course has proceeded, although depending on the fam doc you are following, it varies. It can be in-person consults, in-person telemedicine in a clinic, etc... Small clinical encounters that are part of another course are still allowed (ex: spend 1/2 day in OR) at the discretion of the doctor you are assigned to.

Clinician skills delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Mostly online. Ultrasound training has been shortened from 1h to 15 minutes but has remained in person with proper precautions.

Research delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Not familiar with research in first year so I don't know.

School: UBC VFMP (main site)

Year (1 or 2): 1

Lecture delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): All online, mix of asynch and synch. Includes Anatomy-Radiology/Histology-Pathology Labs. CBL online.

Shadowing/clinic visits delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Shadowing is not permitted. Clinic Visits, mix of telehealth and/or inperson, depends on preceptor: 4 half-days (3-4 hours each) or 2 full-days (6-7 hours each).

Clinician skills delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Mostly online, few in-person sessions (vaccine practice, vital signs, H/Neck and Cardio exams practice)

Research delivery method (online/ in person/ other [please explain]): Seems that we'll be able to do FLEX in-person if necessary. However, online is encouraged. Only when necessary.

There's more a blended model for distributed site (Eg some CBL are in-person, some anatomy labs in-person.

School: Queen's

Year (1 or 2): 1

Lecture delivery method: Online. Lots of self-directed learning (DILs) ; live zoom lectures + PBL/SGL

Shadowing/clinic visits delivery method: Shadowing/observorships have been postponed until Jan 21' for first year pre-clerks. Second year pre-clerks are proceeding with observorships as usual.

Clinician skills delivery method: Interviewing component taught online - P/E sessions done in person during red zone (see below)
Anatomy labs are squeezed into a 5-week red zone (rip).

Research delivery method: Not as familiar with this one, but mostly online, from what I can tell.

Our school has adopted a Green, Yellow, Red zone system to accommodate in-person teaching:
Green Zone - Online learning online. Students follow normal public health guidelines.
Yellow Zone - 14 Day Quarantine period preceding a red zone - minimizing community contacts.
Red Zone - Periods during which anatomy labs and clinical skills (hands on) takes place - Not allowed to leave Kingston during this time, no outside visitors, etc.
