_gettingthere_
for carms personal letters, is it weird if i mention a specific person at the program i'm applying to whose work i really like and want to be part of? in terms of research, advocacy, etc.
shikimate
Might not be a good idea, internal politics is muddy waters, unless it's the PD of course! You could try to indirectly do that by listing a few of your aspirational research topics, which "just happens" to include that particular area of work, then voila, what wonderful happy "coincidence" you could talk about at interview. If unsure, could also hint at area of PD's research, add some sugar in case their mouth gets sour reading you are interested in someone else's research. shikimate
No, most people are not that petty, it's just in case you meet the cunningest of the foxes. Peds is a medium sized program, so it's a reasonably large pool of staff and applicants. Some very small programs might be a different story. bearded frog
It's fine if you phrase it properly. "I'm also excited about the prospect in engaging in research at X. My research interests are in Y, and Z, and I know that X is at the forefront of research in this field, particularity DR. A's work on [specifics]." So is this a big no no? Might be too late now, but what if said internist was leaving at the end of this year? would that change whether or not you'd still apply to that program? Something to think about!
