hello, I was wondering if I can get into dental school with a gpa of 3.5/4.3 and a gpa of 3.78 excluding my first year (3 year bachelor program in kinesiology) and I was wondering if anyone knows about it. my first year was really bad however I've kept an upward trend on my grades so I was wondering if it possible for me to get into university of Toronto

thank you very much

Hi, so I'm not sure whether uoft dentistry excludes your first year or not but the admissions is dependant on multiple factors like essays and the casper test. reality though is that gpa is really important, and the website lists the minimum gpa for an interview is 3.85/4. With regards to Quebec, McGill dentistry admissions is near identical to med where gpa has a huge impact on getting an interview and your gpa is not competitive right now. Upward trend is irrelevant, what matters is the actual gpa you have so I would suggest working on that first.

Hey!

So from what I have heard from my previous peers and my experience is that UofT is majority dependent on GPA/DAT (minor on the CASPer and essay) compared to the other schools(western or McGill) as UofT do no have a section for the extra-curricular. With regards to Western and McGill, they do look for a well balanced extra curricular and less emphesis with regards to GPA. So, you can have a lower GPA but as long as your extra curricular is good you can get an interview.

Hey!

For UofT, the average GPA for the 2019 admission was around 3.94/4.  The minimum was 3.85/4. Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) | Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (utoronto.ca)

If we convert it to the 4.33 scale, this would be about 4.0/4.33 DDS Grade Conversion Instructions.pdf (utoronto.ca)

UofT drops your lowest academic year (sept-aug) if you completed four or more years of study. This is doable since you said that your grades are improving! I'm from Quebec and I too will apply to UofT dent! :) Also make sure to ace yout DAT and Casper as well!

Like others mentionned above, you can shoot your shot at McGill since they also look at your CV. The admission is more hollistic in a sense.

Hope it helps!

Western looks at your percentage not GPA. Convert your GPA to a percentage using the instructions on their website and compare that to the admission statistics they have posted there.
