I am a canadian soon to be MS4 at a USMD. Lord willing I will be doing a residency in usa (either FM or psych) and interested in coming back to Canada for practice. My question is for residency, I will be on a J1 visa, how do I go about getting this?

You should ask your school's admin, they should be the one who informs you. You should be able to go onto an OPT visa for a year and then switch over to a J1. J1s are generally speaking pretty easy to get, H1Bs are harder. Just remember that a J1 essentially forces you to come back to Canada for 2 years after residency so make sure you are sure you want this, otherwise, you may want to go for a H1B. H1Bs can be harder to get and some residencies may not want to sponsor you however.
