Matching outside of Quebec (McGill vs UdeM)

Recommended Posts

Statistically, McGill medical graduates tend to match to residency programs outside of Quebec much more often than UdeM medical graduates. They also tend to match to more programs in more "prestigious" schools, such as UofT and UBC. I am wondering why this difference exists. Is it because most McGill students do not come straight from cegep as opposed to UdeM students? Or is it because McGill students tend to rank these programs more often than UdeM students. Or is it because McGill provides experiences and opportunities to its students that give them better chances at matching to a out-of-province program and more prestigious programs?

I would assume that language plays a role. UdeM consists mostly of francophones, who likely prefer to stay in Quebec, a french speaking province. McGill consists mostly of anglophones, who are probably less deterred than francophones from moving to ROC (anglophone provinces) after graduating

Bingo, at our school (UdeS), there are really NOT A LOT of people who want to match elsewhere than Quebec.

This was just discussed on another thread - yes for sure language/culture/QC plays a big issues, but it extends beyond it.

To make a summary - French/English schools are more similar than ever (P/F grading and elective cap across all schools).. but research/ECs are still a stronger tradition in English-schools along with "gunning" which means that English-speaking CMGs may have more developed CVs and network (including on admission) which can help with matching.

I know of French-speaking grads that even took a year off to try to match to competitive specialties (and did language tests, etc.) but weren't successful in securing interviews outside of QC... partly though away elective choice (assuming comes back) is important.

This is the main difference. Many francophone med students are not interested in going elsewhere for work or for residency.

Many McGill students do not know French at all - or anyway not enough to become a competent resident doctor in Quebec - so they have no choice but to leave. UdeM students, like ULaval and UdeS students, tend to stay in Quebec, whereas ROC students tend to apply more broadly all throughout Canada. Language and culture are among the main reasons. However, if you do study at UdeM and you wish to match outside of Quebec, only you and the efforts you put will matter, not the name of your school.

Also, staying inside of Quebec does not mean less prestigious.
