JohnGrisham
People drop out of anesthesia, and someone transferred in.
shikimate
Coincidentally I know someone who transferred into Mac Anesthesia some years ago from FM. It seems Mac Anesthesia might be more receptive to transfers for the right candidate?
lovemedicinesomuch
Transferring is joke easy lol... if they like you. I transferred to IM and it was incredibly easy... My close friend transferred to anesthesia from FM as well. another friend transferred to peds. People transfer in and out all the time. Most of the people who transferred out of FM never wanted it but it was their back up from a very competitive specialty.. and these people are usually quite strong candidates and they usually have strong transferrable experiences to other fields that are close to their initial field of interest. For instance, my friend currently in anesthesia wanted EM in his first match, but did not match to it. So after his first year of FM he transferred to anesthesia. He had the knowledge, skills, and experience to be able to do it and impress the PD - so they can allow him into their program. Don't stay in FM if you don't really like it. Knowing nothing about the program you also have to ask why are there spots in anesthesia as well for them to go into, and if it is because people left. That door swings both ways unfortunately so you have to do some research. most places are pretty good at attempting to arrange transfers. The main problem is if there simply isn't any spots available where you want to go.
powdermonkey13
Know of a FM R1 who recently transferred to anesthesia. He has already started and will begin his R2 year in July. His advice, make contact with the PD and residents, research the profession, do electives if possible or in areas with transferable skills (icu, cardiology etc.). But, as mentioned above, a spot needs to be available. Usually someone transfers out, LOA’s or outright drops out.
