Guest Alastriss
Hi, Is there any correlation between the MCATs and IQ? I looked at a sample mcat and it seems that there might be a correlation between it and an IQ test.
Guest codloghorn
an IQ is a measure of intelligence. the MCAT measures learned material. an IQ test measures material that DOES NOT require any previous knowledge. in essence, it is a measure of potential. hence, i doubt there is any correlation. Guest coastal79
Sure there's a correlation. Like an IQ test, the VR section has nothing to do with previously learned material, it's just a measure of one's ability to analyze a passage. Even the science sections are more than simple regurgitations of facts. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a correlation between MCAT and IQ. That said, smart people can do poorly on it if they don't prepare.
Guest aneliz
There is a study that I read somewhere that correlated IQ and MCAT scores...no real surprise that they correlate. IQ is based on timed problem solving...guess what the MCAT is about... And, the higher your IQ, the better you tend to do in academic endeavours (ie someone with an IQ of 70 will not do well on the MCAT regardless of how long they study for it...) So, to say that there is no correlation between the two is a little misleading. That said, there is not an 'absolute' correlation...and you can have a high IQ and still get 'burned' or relatively burned compared to how well you could have done, if you don't prepare. Guest Koppertone
I found the majority of the MCAT to be based more upon problem solving than on regurgitation of facts. A lot of the science parts, particularly in orgo, can be deduced with limited knowledge of the subject material. That is to say, you've studied them but do not need to recall them verbatim. Rather you need to be able to know the concepts to solve problems. So I think IQ and MCAT scores may correlate. However I think the deeper question is whether there is any value on IQ or the MCAT as a measure of intelligence, because as we all know how we define intelligence varies. Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, Interestingly, it used to be Mensa's policy that if you scored very well on the MCAT, you could bring your scores to your local Mensa group and they'd welcome you in without you having to complete their written tests. Mensans seem to feel that a correlation exists between IQ and MCAT results. Here's a wee link that provides the cut-off scores for other qualifying tests that some folks around here may have taken, e.g., LSAT, GMAT, etc., that are acceptable to Mensa: www.mwm.org/faq/nitgrit.html Cheers, Kirsteen
