Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, I'm not sure if all Canadian medical schools require the same proof of immunity or vaccinations, but I was a little floored when I received Calgary's requirements. :eek No matter, I started sniffing around for programs or sites where I can have the barrage of immunizations and tests done. Although I've never used their services before, the UofT Health Service program looks like a great resource. Not only do they seem to offer many of the tests and vaccinations required, for free, but for those that do have fees, they appear to be greatly reduced, e.g., $55 per dose for Twinrix (I paid $100 per dose at a travel medical clinic a few years ago). For those of you who will be entering medical school this September and shall need some updated immunizations, here is the link: www.utoronto.ca/health/hsservices.htm Cheers, Kirsteen
Guest cheech10
You do need immunizations at all the schools, but it's mainly the standard ones. Twinrix is not needed (Hep B is, but Hep A is not). The meningococcal and varicella vaccines are the only ones that you might want to get that cost $, and I don't think they're required (maybe varicella is, ar you need to show positive titres). Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, You do need immunizations at all the schools, but it's mainly the standard ones. Yags. The list of immunizations and tests for Calgary is fairly lengthy. For some reason I recall reading that UofT and UBC don't require as many, e.g., they like to see hepatitis, DPT, and a tetanus test, but that was about it. (Not that this is any sort of criteria by which to select a medical school. ) Cheers, Kirsteen
Guest aneliz
Kirsteen...what exactly is Calgary asking for? At UWO you need the following: MMR Diptheria Tetanus Polio Hep B They suggest that if you have not had chickenpox, you might want to consider Varicella, but it is not mandatory. Guest fox
At U of A you need the same- DPT, Hep P, MMR. Almost everyone should be vaccinated with DPT and MMR if they were born in Canada, and it's definitely important to make sure you're boosted... I think it's the same for varicella, but if I hadn't had the chickenpox, I sure would get it to save myself the hassle of being exposed later on
Guest aneliz
Hep P eh? Fortunately we don't have that nasty sounding disease in Ontario.... :b Back to studying I go....
Guest therealcrackers
The way it sounds, most people get Hep P right after they're finished exams; it might be associated with partying, or sleep, or exercise. There are probably several ways to get Hep P, but I guarantee that no one in first or second year at Western will find a way to get Hep P in the next week or so. Guest Ian Wong
If you haven't been exposed to varicella, you definitely should get the VZV immunization; two shots delivered several weeks apart. You can then get an antibody titre to see if the vaccine has stimulated your immune system to produce the protective antibodies. Nothing worse than picking up chickenpox during a Peds or Family Med rotation, and potentially having to look forward to miserable shingles outbreaks for the rest of your life... Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, Kirsteen...what exactly is Calgary asking for? Aneliz, in addition to polio, diphtheria, tetanus, MMR and Hep B, Calgary want a rubella titre, varicella, Mantoux and if you'd like it, meningococcus. Also, this is probably required by the other schools too, but boosters are necessary for diphtheria and tetanus if they haven't been received within the past 10 years. I know I received a tetanus shot when the toes of my left foot were run over by a lawnmower, but that was ~12 years ago, unfortunately. As for diphtheria, I probably received a booster during high school, but that was also more than 10 years ago. I'm increasingly feeling the need to come to grips with being a bit of a human pincushion over the ensuing weeks. :x Cheers, Kirsteen
