Here's a poll for the med students on the forums:

What subject did you study before entering med school? If you did a grad degree and it differs from the undergrad degree, use your grad degree.

Ian

UBC, Med 4

Hey all,

Umm...I was a double major in Biology and Chemistry (not the same as Biochem), so where do I vote??? Since I consider myself more of a chemist than a biologist, I'll stuff the ballot for the Physical Sciences.

I did my two years of pre-req's and then did a year of pharmacy while I was applying. Hope there's no pharmacists reading this, because I hate pharmacy! Sorry if I've offended anyone.

Hey, I failed in my attempts of getting into med this year, but I'm positive I have the credentials, and I am very focused on making it next year. However, this time I'll apply for pharmacy (for which I think I'm a shoo-in) along with med... and if I don't get into med, I'll hopefully do what you did. I, too, hate pharmacy and could not stand doing that for 30+ years, but at the same time, I hate standing still in my education, so it would pass the time while the med schools figure out that they want me.

I find it actually quite weird that people would openly post their hatred for pharmacy. I think this really stems from ignorance about the profession. I am not in pharmacy, but I think as a person wanting to enter medicine, part of doing that is learning to work with other health professionals and by already proclaiming your hatred for a profession, I don't know if that is a reflection who you really are or who you will become. Not all pharmacists dispense pills, in fact, no pharmacist dispenses pills. I know this wasn't mentioned, but this is a very common misconception. Community pharmacists counsel patients about medications, R&D develop new therapies, hospital pharmacists work in hositals, and others do whatever they desire because they can. Personally, pharmacy is not for me, but that is because it doesn't offer some of the qualities i look for in a career. But, I certainly do not hate the profession. When it comes to the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and drug-drug interactions, pharmacists are far more knowledgable than most physicians. So, I think its really an injustice to the profession to go around saying you hate it and that you could not do it for the rest of your life; comments like that just stem from a lack of knowledge and part of being the leader of the health care team is understanding and appreciating each individuals role.
