Summer Plans

Hi Everyone,

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out my summer plans, and I'm wondering if people would mind posting any advice or experiences they have had.

I am in first year at a Canadian medical school, and I was hoping to take at least one of the 'last two summers of my life' ;) off to travel, before attacking the gruel of clerkship/residency/career. I was hoping that it would be next summer, but I can't seem to find any plans as of this summer. I have applied to a few programs (ie. electives, summer studentships) but nothing so far has seemed to work out.

I have the opportunity to do an elective in Europe for a month later this summer, which would be wonderful, and I was thinking of taking the rest of the summer and travelling.

My concerns about this are mainly that I wouldn't be taking the summer as an opportunity to perform research (is this important for residency?) or to make a bit of money (would this matter in the long run, financially?). Also, I feel I may be slight 'bored' (I know! So silly!) by travelling for 10 weeks or so.....

Does anyone have any advice? Can anyone speak from personal experience? What did most of you do for the summer?

Thank you!

<pagetext>Wished I had stumbled upon this series of message boards BEFORE CaRMS!

For those studying for the MCCQE, check out these Bruce Tovee Lecture presentations (the MCCQE review lecture series at UofT):
