<title>Residencies</title>

<pagetext>I've noticed that each year after the 1st round of the CaRMS match, there are often many psychiatry and ob/gyn residency spots that have not been filled (relative to other specialties). I'm just curious as to why this is? I can understand why psychiatry may not be one of the most popular programs, but I'm really surprised that ob/gyn isn't more competitive than it is. I'm just asking because I'm very interested in becoming an ob/gyn.. but is there something about this specialty that makes it less "desirable" to be in than specialties such at ENT, dermatology, opthalmology..etc etc.. Is it one of the more time intensive specialties? Thanks, and good luck to everyone in the fall! :)

<title>Perception of medical schools</title>

<pagetext>I realize that unlike the US, Canadian medical schools are pretty much equal in terms of quality of education. However, does anyone out there still feel as if not all the schools are actually perceived in the same fashion with regards to prestige and quality? To me, it almost seems as if there are unofficially "2 tiers" of medical schools - The ontario schools, UBC, Alberta, and McGill in the upper crust, and the rest of the Canadian schools (MUN, Dal, U of S, Manitoba, Calgary..) in the bottom layer.

I've read many of the posts regarding the futility of med school rankings in Canada, so there's really no need to re-post such arguments. What I'm curious to know is whether your medical school influences your "marketability" - for lack of a better word - or your future opportunities. U of T has a very large national and international reputation relative to some of the smaller and less funded medical schools. If there are equal applicants for a job - one who went to U of T and the other who went to say U of S, do they TRULY have the same chance at it, or would the person from U of T get further based on reputation and name??
