Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, I recently picked up a great wee book (Lilliputian in size, I presume, to fit nicely in a med student coat pocket ): "How to be a Truly Excellent Junior Medical Student". In a small fit of science-writing avoidance yesterday, I picked it up for a quick flip-through, and reading it brought a few things out that left me feeling a wee bit uneasy. The primary source of this uneasiness related to practicing new procedures on live and alert patients. Obviously, I know that medical students need to practice techniques on real bodies to hone their skills, but reading the strategies and issues outlined in this wee book for approaching new procedures, e.g., phlebotomy, made me a little uneasy. I don't feel that great about potentially putting patients through undue pain (relative to the pain incurred when a doctor with more experience may do the procedure) when I'm learning the ropes. Do you mind if I ask those of you who have been through the learning of new, potentially painful techniques on live patients, how you handled this? :rolleyes Cheers, Kirsteen

Guest Ian Wong
Floating back to the top... A lot of these threads appear to be pretty decimated after the June 2005 hacking attack on EZBoard. Still, I've restored these threads so if you have a similar question, you can reply to these threads and hopefully someone will answer you!
