I'm still a premed, but I'm just wondering why there Family Practice positions, as stated on carms, aren't being filled. I know it's the largest residency program, but what are the reasons for the shortage of family doctors?

This is a rather broad question, with probably a dozen different reasons. There is a current thread in the Med Students General Forum about this and another older one in this section. Take a scan through.

From what I have read though (Im just an incomming med student), it has a lot to do with workload, pay and respect. FP have to work very hard and see a lot of patients in order to max out their billing (amt of money they receive). FP also have their overhead costs, which combined with their lower salary makes their actual income much less than a specialty.

I have read on this board that there is a lack of respect (ie. FP aren't as smart as a specialist, FPs only deal with pink eye and indigestion) for FP from the specialties and this is somehow passed along to the med students.

ANyway, I could be way off base in reality, but this is the feeling I get from these boards.

Others: Please add in where I have gone wrong or have left something out.
