Anyone ever hear of getting in with an 8 in VR? I feel like I have a fairly competitive app other than that and the thought of attempting again is a bit overwhelming.

Congrats on all your acceptances! I really enjoyed going to med school in the US and it was definitely worth the extra $$$. I hope you'll have the same experience. Those are great schools. You can't really go wrong.

I only applied to Queen's/Ottawa/Western/Toronto, and have been rejected from all those, so Canada is out the window.

 

I'm still undecided which US school that I've gotten into is my top choice. I think Michigan State CHM is going to be it though. Need more time to think, thank god we get time to decide!!

 

Congrats! I had to make a similar choice a few years ago and I chose Wayne over MSU, let me know if you have any questions.

What's better about US schools?

 

Just so we're clear ... I am not implying that Cad schools are inferior to US schools by any means.

 

Why?

 

Every situation is unique .... but for me:

 

-The networking opportunities and connections available at some American schools are unparalleled.

-The environment and the school's learning resources were important.

-The most positive, comfortable med school interviews I had were at US schools.

-The idea of spending 4 years learning and training in the US healthcare system would be very valuable in helping me decide ... if I could see myself living and practicing there.

-Having the option to match back in Canada as a CMG and not having to do not have to do MCCQE exams was appealing (vs. having to do both MCCQE and USMLE to apply for residency in the US).

-The tuition back then was more reasonable than it is now!

Check with the College of Physicians and Surgeons policy for registration for the province you'd be interested in going to. It'll vary by jurisdiction. I can tell you that for MB, the policy for residency is USMLE step 1 and 2 may substitute MCCEE.

hey GGG ... unfortunately, the CPSO caved into pressure from other provinces and as of Feb 2010, no longer recognized USMLE as being equivalent to MCCQE for independent licensing. What this means is with only USMLE, you can still do residency in Ontario without having done MCCQE and will be able to do your royal college exams, but the CPSO will not issue an independant license without restrictions to anyone who started residency after July 2009 in Ontario, unless they have done MCCQE.

I think if you keep them updated, write letters of interest or intent, and call them every once in a while to see if there has been progress, there may be a decent chance. I don't think US schools rank their waitlists so it comes down to the ppl who show more interest vs those who don't keep contact after being WL'd.

Congrats to all those with good news. Regarding the waitlist at Wayne State, there is still a decent chance for acceptance. I spent the entire cycle on the list last year without getting off so I know a bit about how it works. At the end of the cycle (I think April/May), they cut the waitlist and reject people at the bottom. If you're not cut, you're on the "final" waitlist that carries right through orientation week. At my interview this year, I was told I was just a fraction away from getting called last year - so you really never know. Good luck!
