Hi everybody, I have two question....

1) after finishing medical school in the US, how is easy is it to get a residency position in Canada, Ontario specifically? (do I have a better chance of Residency than if I say got my MD from the caribbean)

2) My main goal is to become a Pathologist, is getting an MD from the Carribean a good idea....

My stats: 3.50 GPA and 12,12,12,R on the MCAT yeah.... ADVISE me please.... I'm just below the cuttoff for Western, and Queens, too low for U of T and definetly Ottawa....

Please advise.....

Is the 3.50 GPA weighted? If you improved substantially in your last couple years, and have first year courses pulling you down, your weighted GPA for U of T, Ottawa, Western, could be much better.

Moved out of the General forum into the American schools forum...

As far as matching into a Canadian program out of a US med school, that may or may not be difficult. As a US grad, you may not be able to match into the first round of the Canadian match for residencies. Similarly, going to a Caribbean school isn't going to facilitate matching in the Canadian match; they are set up to try to match you into a US residency program.

Hmm - definitely check with Queen's. If they'd be willing to drop one year of the five (that 3rd year is what's potentially killing you) you'd have a pretty good shot as your MCATs are "better than solid" and you'd make the cutoffs (can't remember the exact number, but I think it's been 3.57 or 3.58 the last few years.)

If you're willing to do a 6th year, UWO could also definitely be a possibility. The cutoff for the 2005 class was 3.60 for your BEST year and your LAST year (ie the 6th year). . . but it's a gamble as you'd have to hit that cutoff in the last year, and cutoffs for 2004 and 2006 were 3.65. I think, though, that they've been as low as 3.5? in the last 5-6 years. You won't know the cutoffs until January.

American schools. . . seems like "Brain Drain" is the expert on these. But from what I know they tend to emphasize the MCATs (and your scores are very good) more and gpa less. I'm pretty sure there are some schools that you'd have a shot at.

As far as getting into a Canadian residency from the US, that's something that's a bit confusing. Initially I'd heard you'd have to apply as an IMG (Internation Medical Graduate) which means you're not eligible for resiedencies until the second round of matching. But I was at a CaRMS career fair back in February where someone in the know said CaRMS was no longer considering Canadians who trained in the US as IMGs. I'm not 100% positive, though.

Apologies for not being able to give you anything more concrete.
