2 die after given wrong solution at hospital

 

Calgary - Two patients died at Foothills Hospital after being given the wrong solution during dialysis, the Calgary Health Region said Thursday.

 

The CHR says that the critically ill middle-aged man and elderly woman, who were on continuous dialysis, were given potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride.

 

Calling it "tragic and difficult news," the health officials said they apologized to the families Wednesday night.

 

"I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to the families that have suffered this devastating loss," Dr. Bob Johnston, chief medical officer for the CHR, said at a news conference Thursday. "I fully understand my words will not minimize the loss."

 

The CHR said its centralized pharmacy – which prepares drugs for all the city's hospitals – made up 35 bags of the incorrect solution, the rest of which have since been retrieved.

 

When the elderly woman died in early March, a physician noticed she had a high level of potassium and checked the dialysis solution. They then discovered that the middle-aged man, who had died in late February, had also been given the solution.

 

Both chloride compounds were purchased from the same company and had identically shaped bottles and similar packaging, the CHR said.

 

Sodium chloride, which is common salt, helps to regulate the safe fluid levels in the body.

 

Potassium chloride is used for a range of applications, including medicine, food and lethal injections for death row inmates, because high doses can cause cardiac arrest.

 

The CHR says no other patient received solution from the same lot. Continuous dialylsis is done only in an intensive care ward.

I just had a quick look through the UofC website in an attempt to find some information re: tuition, but didn't come upon any. Can someone provide an idea of where this year's tuition will sit, and how that may be expected to change over the next few years? Has the UofC medical program gone private, i.e., attached a solid rocket booster to its tuition fees? (Hopefully not. :rolleyes )
