Hello, and a happy 2003!

 

I managed to return to TO and narrowly avoid this 24-hour snow blitz, from my first sights of another part of this grand land: of live Alberta beef chomping their way around the grassy bits flanking the highway; of the gray-brown rockfaces and stickly pine trees while taking a bunch of avid and fuzzy huskies for a dogsledding jaunt around Spray Lakes; of a handful of excited yet slightly starstruck Lake Louise hotel staff who were eager to be taught some of my grandmum's naughty Irish Gaelic phrases (they were devising a scheme to attract the attentions of Pierce Brosnan who checked in to our hotel on New Year's eve). What a truly awe-inspiring part of the country you Calgary meds folks learn near... Toronto seems all the flatter!

 

I have a couple of questions for those in the know regarding Calgary's medical program (well, at least the more geographic issues surrounding the medical program) and I'm hoping some of you can oblige. First off, when we drove along the highway just outside of Calgary, we passed a large hospital and cancer centre. The cab driver mentioned that the medical school is also situated there, although he motioned that the UC campus is situated elsewhere. This led me to wonder where the majority of non-clinical medical school activities occur--is it on the UC campus? If so, how long does it generally take to move from the UC campus to the surrounding teaching hospitals?

 

With respect to housing, where are the magnets of ideal housing for a UC medical student? Would it be wise to live downtown, or are there other neighbourhoods which are ideal for setting up home when attending UC's medical school?

I'm an oop and so know very little about the Calgary Med school program. Is it a four year program like the other med schools? Could anyone tell me where would be the best place to look up some info on the school (ie do they have a PBL based curricula?). I would GREATLY appreciate any help that I can get.
