uwo mcat cut-offs

Recommended Posts

does any one know if uwo will be strict with their mcat cut-offs this year?

i'm just seeing hte old cut offs, 10-10-10....

but i was also reading past threads discussing them using a more 'hollistic approach' (which didn't seem to happen last cycle). i'm guessing that it won't happen this cycle either, with > number of applicants.

The thing is that "holistic" means a lot of work. While, many other schools do take everything into account (i.e. GPA, essays, extracurriculars, MCAT), I am not so sure how keen UWO is in reading so many essays and other non-academic stuff for the large initial pool of applicants.

I think that last year (and this is pure speculation), they intended to use a more holistic approach, but when they realized all the work involved, they backtracked and used the GPA/MCAT cut-off once again. I know that they are using the cut-offs again this year, but whether they will be the only determing factor on who get's an interview, I don't know.

remember if you are from southwestern ontario, they give you a break and let you be 9-9-9 minimum with overall 30 *i believe*

For 2006 accepted individuals, if you were from the SWOMEN area, the cut-offs were only 8-8-8.

If not from SWOMEN, it was 10-10-10 this past year.

Unfortunately, I don't see the 10's dropping given the double cohort applicant pool.

They are also the only school in Ontario (I think) to have a WS cutoff of Q, while most other places its P. And this is only if the WS even really counts for anything. Most people say its only used when VR and WS are very off.. otherwise its almost dismissed.

I believe two years ago, the cut-off was indeed P.

But your point is well taken. Unless it has changed, the composite score for admission is 50% interview, 25% GPA (best year) and 25% VR + WS.

I looked through the UWO website and the 25% VR + WS weighting that you suggest is nowhere to be found.

Their website materials state they consider all sections of the MCAT equally.

I don't think this formula has ever been explicitly mentioned on the website, but it had been passed down through this forum from people on the admissions committee. This was the formula when I was admitted in 2004, so maybe it has changed (as I stated). Besides, it was known that the interview was really what set applicants apart. Most students had roughly the same for GPA and MCAT, since they all made the cut-offs. Regardless, ALL sections of the MCAT are needed to make the cut-off for an interview, but how they get your composite score to offer a seat in the class of 2011 is completely unknown to the public.
