rad86
How does one become a MCAT teacher for Kaplan/Princeton Reivew? Do you have to have taken the course with them? What kind of scores would qualify? Do they care about section scores only or the overall as well? Thanks for any info
JewelLeigh
I taught a full MCAT course (all sections) for them 2 years ago. My MCAT scores of 11,11,10,Q were good enough apparently. I didn't have to do a course, but did some training via teleconference (I'm in Halifax).
MrCanuck
Kaplan and Princeton both have online applications. I just applied with Kap and their website says you need at least 90th percentile to apply. (33?) They also want you to give each section score. Throw in an appplication, it couldn't hurt. I haven't applied for Princeton yet, but I'd assume it's similar to Kaplan. Peace out.

MrCanuck
I'm not 100% sure about sectional scores. I do seem to remember hearing about teachers who got great scores on some sections and poor scores on others. They only taught the sections in which they did well. I also think it depends on what location you want to teach and what the current demand is for teachers. An 11 is sorta sexy, so why not apply. The Kaplan application is pretty brief, with an optional section for a cover letter. Also to respond to one of the first questions of this post. You don't have to have been a Kaplan student or Princeton student to teach for either.
MDThisYear
I'm also interested in this...but does anyone know what the deadlines would be? Particularly for the summer.

Smurfette
I taught an MCAT prep course. I received a 13 in the section that I was teaching.
lostintime
What if you get a really good score second time round? Would they look down upon you because you had to try twice to get it?
Kuantum
What if you get a really good score second time round? Would they look down upon you because you had to try twice to get it? I highly doubt it, many take the MCAT more than once.
rad86
Thanks guys for the responses. I had a 13 for the Physical Sciences, but only got 68% on the Princeton Review screening test for GCHEM that I just took...seems like I've forgotten everything...damn can I still teach? alan
What if you get a really good score second time round? Would they look down upon you because you had to try twice to get it? All of my Kaplan instructors, with the exception of one, had actually written it twice (and of course absolutely RUINED it the second time around). degoo_
I am also applying to teach the princetonreview course in general chemistry. I haven't done the questions they sent yet. Anyone know the deadline, and how much these people get paid?
Kuantum
Yea, Kaplan e-mailed me asking to teach. I got in the 90th+ percentile for three of the sections and in like the 15th for the other. So, I wouldn't teach that section I bombed.
degoo_
sorry to ask again, but I want to know if this is worth pursuing financially... anyone know the pay for TPR?

bioboy2007
sorry to ask again, but I want to know if this is worth pursuing financially... anyone know the pay for TPR? I've heard that Kaplan instructors make approximately $25/hour, but this may be different for TPR.
Kuantum
$25/hour is SOLID!!
degoo_
Yea.. if its that I'd definetly go for it. No one knows for sure eh? I'd even to the proctoring on Saturdays, I wonder how much that pays.
degoo_
TPR starts at 23/hr + they pay for training.
avenir001
Yeah, the pay is really good. But how many hours/week would you be working? And it's not all year round, is it?
Kuantum
Kaplan is like 6hrs/week I think. Also, if you do the weekend session, that's like...what...8 hours!!! That's quite a bit of dough

That's quite a bit of dough Don't you have to prep outside of the actual classes though? I'd check that, because if they pay you $23 per hour when you are teaching, but you have to spend like 10 hours to prepare for 1 6-hour session, the pay comes out to be not that great. Kinda reminds me of when a friend got a job at an investment bank and was all fired up about a starting salary of 80 grand (this is New York though, mind you), but then ended up working 80+ hours a week every week - so she was really getting the equivalent of a secretary's salary. WabbaJ
hey friends, Kaplan is paying 16$/hr if its your first time teaching, 18$/hr if youre a veteran (over 1yr experience). i thought trainees/teachers would get beacoup bucks, but its nothing sky-high. many people assume that the teachers get about 25$ an hour, but its not true, at least not where i'm form. this isnt some "heard it from someone else" rumor, so dont worry, i dont have any intent of misleading anyone. for kaplan teach's, thats the rate--TPR, i cant say, but if its 23$/hr, thats is so for realz. also, to teach, you dont need to have an overall 90th percentile for a composite score, just 90th percentile for the section you want to teach. so getting a 14PS 1VR is totally cool-- for teaching;) and, lets say you do poorly your first MCAT, but get a 15 on one section in your second attempt. Kaplan doesnt look you up the second time around. you have to let them know yourself. but its no biggy. lastly, lets say you didnt take the Kaplan course, but want to teach. let Kaplan know and its totally possible you can teach. hope this clears things up. or at the very least, hope i didnt make myself look like a goofball. and yes, i read the previous posts to make sure:p PS: its kinda hard to get a 15 on a section from "what i hear".
