Teaching for Kaplan/Princeton Review

Kaplan and Princeton both have online applications. I just applied with Kap and their website says you need at least 90th percentile to apply. (33?) They also want you to give each section score. Throw in an appplication, it couldn't hurt. I haven't applied for Princeton yet, but I'd assume it's similar to Kaplan.

Peace out.

Could it be 90th percentile in a specific sub-section of the MCAT (i.e. 11 in PS/BS/VR)?

I'm not 100% sure about sectional scores. I do seem to remember hearing about teachers who got great scores on some sections and poor scores on others. They only taught the sections in which they did well.

I also think it depends on what location you want to teach and what the current demand is for teachers.

An 11 is sorta sexy, so why not apply. The Kaplan application is pretty brief, with an optional section for a cover letter.

Also to respond to one of the first questions of this post. You don't have to have been a Kaplan student or Princeton student to teach for either.

What if you get a really good score second time round? Would they look down upon you because you had to try twice to get it?

All of my Kaplan instructors, with the exception of one, had actually written it twice (and of course absolutely RUINED it the second time around).

Kaplan is like 6hrs/week I think. Also, if you do the weekend session, that's like...what...8 hours!!! That's quite a bit of dough

Don't you have to prep outside of the actual classes though? I'd check that, because if they pay you $23 per hour when you are teaching, but you have to spend like 10 hours to prepare for 1 6-hour session, the pay comes out to be not that great.

Kinda reminds me of when a friend got a job at an investment bank and was all fired up about a starting salary of 80 grand (this is New York though, mind you), but then ended up working 80+ hours a week every week - so she was really getting the equivalent of a secretary's salary.

hey friends,

Kaplan is paying 16$/hr if its your first time teaching, 18$/hr if youre a veteran (over 1yr experience). i thought trainees/teachers would get beacoup bucks, but its nothing sky-high. many people assume that the teachers get about 25$ an hour, but its not true, at least not where i'm form. this isnt some "heard it from someone else" rumor, so dont worry, i dont have any intent of misleading anyone. for kaplan teach's, thats the rate--TPR, i cant say, but if its 23$/hr, thats is so for realz.

also, to teach, you dont need to have an overall 90th percentile for a composite score, just 90th percentile for the section you want to teach. so getting a 14PS 1VR is totally cool-- for teaching;)

and, lets say you do poorly your first MCAT, but get a 15 on one section in your second attempt. Kaplan doesnt look you up the second time around. you have to let them know yourself. but its no biggy.

lastly, lets say you didnt take the Kaplan course, but want to teach. let Kaplan know and its totally possible you can teach.

hope this clears things up. or at the very least, hope i didnt make myself look like a goofball. and yes, i read the previous posts to make sure:p

PS: its kinda hard to get a 15 on a section from "what i hear".
