What are my chances?

Recommended Posts

:) Hey Guys,

I'm an in Province student (at the U of A in fact). Here are my stats.

GPA overall - 3.6ish

Pre-req GPA 3.5

MCAT - 36R (12PS 11VR 13BS)

I have a ton of EC's, with a fair amount of clinical experience, time volunteering overseas, and have travelled a lot. Volunteer at school, and in the SU as well. Should get some decent LOR's. Also do research and have a few really good scholarships.

How do you think my chances look? Thanks a ton for your input!

All I can say is that there is a broad spectrum (grades, MCAT). In terms of GPA and pre req GPA, average stats say it's 3.7 and 3.83 respectively (for 2005 for example). The spectrum goes from usually 3.5 to a 4.0 and around the same thing for pre-reqs. I've even heard of a 3.3 getting in or a 23 on the MCAT getting in.

Your MCAT is way above average and your ECs and whatnot are as well. So, in terms of your "sub-average" grades, you're balancing out to a pretty solid or "average" interview candidate. From my own personal experience, if you get an interview, it's a whole new ball game (I know people who have moved 50-80 spots).

keep in mind that although the 'average' accepted gpa is 3.7, that includes the oop candidates, who aren't even considered if they have a gpa <3.7 so this tends to skew the results a bit higher than for the in-province applicants.

so, bioboy, while I can't comment on whether you'll be 'safe' with your stats, they sound good, assuming you have average/above-average ec's, volunteer, etc.
