List of US Schools Accepting Canadians

This is from the old EZboard, I just thought it would be useful to have on here. If you're aware of any changes to this list... make sure you post them!

The message below is copied from SDN (http://www.studentdoctor.net) ... because it may be useful to people, and it's easier to find old threads here than there.

Schools that are marked with an asterisk ( * ) have been PERSONALLY identified by an SDN member that they interview regular Canadians

UPDATE:

Special thanks to token for providing a much needed update to the list:

Here’s an alternative list of schools that you can assume are Canadian friendly. This list is very conservative. I started with the schools that I personally know are Canadian friendly (because either someone here or someone I know interviewed there) and we can add to it from there. However it is entirely possible that there are schools missing, so do your own research! (Also please PM me or a mod if you have more info to add, especially re: financial aid and escrows).

Black – PM101 certified Canadian friendly. You will likely still be at a disadvantage compared to American applicants, but they do accept Canadians.

Red – require at least 1 year's tuition in escrow prior to matriculation

Orange – will only take international students who have completed some undergraduate coursework in the US

Green – offers financial aid and/or merit scholarships to Canadians

Grey – should be Canadian friendly based on MSAR/USNews international statistics, but can’t be directly verified

California: the two top UCs have varying histories wrt accepting international students. They both screen for secondaries however. Stanford like all other private top tiers is citizenship-neutral.

Loma Linda - SDA (or compatible belief systems) only!

UCLA

UCSF

Stanford

Connecticut:

University of Connecticut

Yale

DCish:

Georgetown

George Washington

Georgia:

Emory

Hawaii

Illinois:

University of Chicago – Pritzker

Northwestern

Rosalind Franklin

Kentucky:

University of Kentucky

Louisiana:

Tulane

Maryland:

Johns Hopkins

University of Maryland

Massachusetts:

Boston University

Harvard

Tufts

Michigan:

Michigan State

Wayne State

Minnesota:

Saint Louis University

Washington University at St Louis

New Hampshire:

University of Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania State University

Rhode Island:

Brown – effectively, since there are so few places for students not already enrolled in their BS/MD program

Tennessee:

Vanderbilt

Meharry

Texas: note, you cannot apply to Texas schools through AMCAS. You must apply through their own dedicated application service, TMDSAS.

Baylor

UT Medical Branch @ Galveston

UT Southwestern

Virginia:

Virginia Commonwealth University

EVMS

Wisconsin:

Medical College of Wisconsin

This list is outdated. I'll make a better list soon... :) before the next cycle. Since I quit my job, I have so much free time on my hands!!!!

Yes please it really helps to know where to start. The whole process seems so time consuming and stressful. I'm a newbie at this. :(

btw: thanks sonyvaio for all your posts in the forum, it helps to get the info from someone who has been through this hell first lol.

Hey,

Here is some correspondence I received last year (as I was pondering on whether to apply to US schools or not). Since a couple of people were asking about Canadians and their acceptability at US Schools, I thought this would be helpful. Mind you, the information is 1 year old and lots can happen during that time! atleast this will help some of you to build up a list of schools to apply to, or ask the relevant questions.

Before I applied, I emailed a whole whack of US schools asking:

a) do you accept Canadians? (have you done so historically)

B) If you do accept Canadians, are there quotas on international students? must canadians go above and beyond what US applicants achieve?

c) need I have gone to a US university if I do not hold a green card or a US citizenship?

d) will you accept OAC english? (if the school requires English)

Having done so, I whittled down my list of potential applications to these:

1) Northwestern

2) Case Western

3) Dartmouth

4) Georgetown

5) Harvard

6) Cornell

7) Mt Sinai

8) Albert Einstein (Yeshiva U)

9) Tufts (although this was a long-shot)

10) Boston University

11) University of Chicago (Pritzker)

12) University of Vermont

This is a decent enough list. Things being as there are, I'm extremely happy with it. If I had been more prudent, however, I would also have applied to schools like Wayne State, Penn State and Rosalind Franklin. These are known to take Canadians, and are what the studentdoctor.net community might call 'safety' schools. It is always wise to throw in a safety school or two - just so that you are more likely to have options.

Hey

These schools also accept internationals:

Rosalind Franklin

U of Minnesota – Twin Cities

Stony Brook

U of North Carolina – Chapel Hill

Brown

there are others who claim to accept Internationals or Canadians only, but they have not accepted anyone in past years, and hence I have not included them.

And according the MSAR, Virginia Commonwealth does not accept Internationals.

hey guys,

I wanted to ask if the list of US med schools that regularly take Canadians is acceptably up to date. I will be applying to the US this year, and if anyone can please pass on some experience (such as apply to X Y Z on the list) it would be greatly appreciated. I think I'm going to apply to all of them.

thanks!

This list is very much up to date. All these schools do accept Canadians. My friend who applied this past year contacted most of these schools to varify.

Does anyone know the requirements for Boston medical school in terms of GPA and MCAT? It doesn't seem to specify on their website.

http://www.bumc.bu.edu/Dept/Content.aspx?DepartmentID=37&PageID=9616

Screw Boston....unless you got like a 38 and 3.8, don't bother. They get something like 11,000 applicants a year. I've clicked countless mdapplicants profiles on SDN and have yet to see anyone who even got an interview there (even folks who interviewed at Ivies).

Hey

To answer your question about Boston University, their average GPA for Fall 2005 is a 3.65 and their average MCAT is 10.7. They have a 2.7% acceptance rate for internationals and a 4.7% overall acceptance rate. It's the 31st most difficult school to get into in the US. It also happens to be one of the priciest private schools, because of high tuition and big city living expenses.

All this info courtesy of the US News Report.

What is East Texas? I can't find it in the MSAR...

But in Texas, the schools that accept Canadians are:

-Baylor (Houston)

-Texas A&M (College Station)

-U of Texas in Galveston

-U of Texas in Houston

-U of Texas Southwestern (Dallas)

Keep in mind though that Texas law states that 90% of matriculants must be residents of Texas, so internationals don't hold much of a chance...

hey gang,

i was just wondering about the list that shows the schools that interview "regular Canadians".

whats a regular Canadian? is it supposed to sa "regularly interview Canadians"?

please clarify. thanks!

I'm thinking folks without demonstrated ties to the state/school or folks who didn't study in the US for undergrad.
