cassica
Hey everyone, I finally decided to get Laser Eye surgery after my LMCC part 1 in May. Has anyone on the board had this procedure done? Please share your experience. Which company (ie TLC, LASIK MD etc...) did you go through and are you happy with them? how much recovery time did you need??? Thanks!

muchdutch
I haven't had it done personally (although I am thinking about it in a few years), but I know a boyfriend-girlfriend couple who had it done, as well as two other girls who had it done. The two girls - don't know that much about their story, but they are both very satisfied (and it was a few years ago for each one). The girlfriend - through LasikMD, I think it was the PRK that they did (the procedure without the flap) and she was find by two days after the procedure. The boyfriend - a different story. He went in for it (LasikMD) and the surgeon told him his corneas were too thin for the one procedure (I forget which one, sorry), and so he'd have to come back another day for the other procedure. He did, and had such troubles after. He had excruciating pain and they had run out of the drops they had given him after one day (it was a weekend). They called the 24hr help line but they weren't all that helpful. Went to emerg for some drops/painkillers, etc. He was in pain an unable to function for a full 3-4 days. Then things started getting better. Now he's all healed up and glad he did it, just feels like it didn't really go as planned with all the pain and whatnot. He says he would probably still do it again, but would book more time off work and would definitely think long and hard to go through that pain again. So there's some food for thought. All of these people did it through LasikMD and are all quite satisfied with the results, just that one little horror story. But presumably, as long as your eyes are 'healthy' and 'normal', you would be fine with little to no complications (fingers crossed). Even after his story, I am still considering it. The benefit just seems so great as compared to glasses/contacts everyday, all the time. I suppose you'd need to consider the medschool-related factors yourself (none of these folks are meds). Kuantum
I have worn glasses since gr. 6 and at this point, I don't think I'd consider something like that. I love my eye sight too much and the thought of something going wrong scares to death.
Jochi1543
Glasses are hot. My former boss did it, and she had lots of complications....not much in terms of pain, but heavily blurred vision (so bad, she had to hold on to the wall to get around her apartment), etc. She was out of work for a month, after which they did a follow-up surgery....that went better, and she was able to return to work quickly, but guess what - she still wears glasses. UBCGuy
Not sure where you are located, but in Calgary there are (or were a couple of year anyhow) only a couple of options. Demong got a reputation for being a butcher and I am not sure if he has cleaned up his act. I don't want to say that he/his practise is terrible as I really don't have enough validated information, but I know that he has had serious problems in the past. And so before you decide on him do some research...

JewelLeigh
I know 7 people who have had it done, 4 of whom are medical people. -2 of my classmates had it done at LASIK MD and are both very happy and glasses-free. They both did agree that the dry eye that follows the procedure for several weeks was more annoying than they expected, but are otherwise very happy with the result. -1 of my Dal med professors had it done at LASIK MD and sings the praises of both LASIK MD and the procedure...another very happy camper. -1 preceptor of mine (an internal medicine specialist) had it done via TLC and again he is a satisfied customer. In his words "I can see my toes in the shower, my son when we are swimming, my alarm clock in the middle of the night and best of all - no more dry eyes with contacts when I'm on call!!" -3 other friends (non-medical) had it done (2 with LASIK MD, 1 with TLC) and all 3 are very happy. One girl in particular commented that she had taken 5 days off of work but would've easily been able to go back to work the 2nd day after the procedure (office job). Anyway...still considering it myself...I'm terrified, but wow would it rule to SEE.

The Law
I love wearing glasses, but I also would love to be able to see ... with my own eyes. lol
0T6
i've been thinking about it but i think my vision's good enough that if i don't feel like wearing my glasses.. i don't have to. i need them to drive or if i'm at the movies, but i don't wear them around the house or if i'm going out-out.. but its probably something i'd consider if it gets any worse. The Law
Woah! That was cool. How does the surgery work?
muchdutch
I know you don't feel it, but it just makes me cringe watching it when they are doing the cutting of the flap. I'm sure there's a lot fo safeguards but it seems like it would be so easy todo something that would warrant an 'oops'!
The Law
Yeah, I heard it was painless... lol, which is a good thing... but it looks kinda scary to have to do.
muchdutch
Who ever thought of that in the first place? I mean, who said 'hey, letc cut a flap off the top of your eye and flip it open and see what we can do!' Even better, who said 'sure! let's go for it!'... TimmyMax
Hey, One of the IM residents here at UWO had it done a few months ago- he took a week off work and had it done then. Aside from the dry eye immediately afterwards and the month or so of old-person sunglasses, he's pretty happy with the results!- he too
Jixe
I was thinking the exact same thing lol. I am pretty sure that no one thought of it. From what I remember reading, a boy had fallen off a bike and scratched his cornea (crazy, I know) and he told his doctor that he could see better. ffp
I know an interventional cardiologist who just got LASIK and everything went GREAT. It's just over one week, and he's already back on call again. He's a brave man. I'm still too chicken to go through with it because I'm considering interventional and if I lost my eyesight, I'd be SCREWED. Would be nice to get rid of the glasses, though
physiology
Anyone know of any Canadian ophthalmologists who've gotten the procedure done?
LazyGuy
One day in class, we were doing small groups in opthamology and someone asked the opthamologist, who was wearing glasses, why he didnt get corrective surgery. He told us that it wasn't the worth the risk losing his sight and not being able to practice surgery anymore. Just something to think about if you're considering it.
