Hello~ How important are the reference letters?

Recommended Posts

I am new here and want to say hi first!

Anyways, I go to UBC and took my first DAT in Nov07 and applied to UBC only.

I believe I wrote a decent essay, but I know that my references are not good.

I got two refers from two profs whom I have never even met before.

Does UBC look at the reference section a lot? or is it something that I don't even have to worry about.

Thanks!!

Umm...reference letters that say something bad will more-than-likely kill your application. A so-so reference is probably not that big a deal if the rest of your application is good. A really good reference letter probably helps, but not to the same degree as a bad reference letter would hurt you. So, a good reference letter probably will not get you in, but a bad reference letter will likely keep you out. I hope that makes sense. What are you are describing does not sound like a bad reference letter (provided they only said good things about you). I wouldn't worry too much about. However, next time try to get letters from people you have actually met. GL.

i might have to do this as well...i do have this supervisor who's known me since sept who could write me one..but i don't think i've been able to show her how brilliant i am yet :D and i've never had a class with her...so maybe a prof i've never met but in whose class got 96% would be a better choice...so good to know that it's possible...i wouldn't wanna approach a prof i dont know for a ref letter and have them be like, what?! r u out of ur mind??? lol
