Strange question - wisdom teeth and deafness

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

My boyfriend is having his wisdom teeth removed soon. His mother is trying to stop him from doing so because she said that having them removed in the winter can cause deafness. She said she heard this from her dentist (note: she last saw a dentist in the 60s).

My first reaction was "she's crazy!" Out of curiosity, I googled this phenomenon. Not surprisingly, nothing came up on the first few pages listed.

So, I thought I'd throw out the question to dental students. Is this something you have ever heard of? It sounds preposterous to me... is it an old wive's tale? Is she just crazy?

Thank you!

Your boyfriend should review the risks associated with 3rd molar extraction with the treating dentist or oral surgeon. Then he can go home to mom and confidently say that deafness is not a likely risk of the procedure.
