phulmayaa
In first year I had a C+, B-, and a B+ and these courses were in Calculus and Physics. My overall average came out to be around 82%, but the GPA is much lower, ~3.43, due to how it's calculated. Not to sound like I'm giving excuses but I was actually solely taking care of two individuals in my family who both needed constant attention (adults post major surgery). I'm worried that this might affect my application since people on the board talk about dropping their courses when they get a C+, and now that's too late for me! What do you guys think? I'm thinking I'll get at least 85% in my second year. Thanks in advance.
Kuantum
You have the essay and other areas of the application to explain that kind of stuff. Also, if you check the statistics, you may get a better idea of how you compare to those who got in. However, understand that just because you are within or above average does not necessarily mean that you are more likely to garner an acceptance. Also, just because you are below average does not necessarily mean you are less likely to get in. It's a package and everything is generally taken as a whole. Do people tend to explain their circumstances around getting bad grades? I was afraid I would come off as having a bunch of excuses. I guess I would need verifiers to confirm the validity of my situation at that time?
cheeseshredder
I know that you got in already, but was digging through your posts since you were a third year applicant, which I am this cycle. They've been very helpful! I got B+, B-, C+ in Math 180/101/200. I ended up getting all A+s in second term second year to bring me to ~85-86%, but when converted into GPA, it's something like 3.65. I see you didn't actually ask a question here, but in any case the UBC system of academic evaluation is of great advantage to students like us since they only consider percentages. Where you might encounter obstacles would be in applications for other schools, but personally UBC was my top choice anyhow!
anna8
Slightly off-topic here, but you mentioned UBC considering percentages. So in the application portion where you input your prerequisite grades, do you have to put in percentages?
VitaminC
Yep, percentages if you were given percentages. If your school only gives letter grades, I think you put the letter grade and UBC will convert it for you.
anna8
That's super helpful, had no idea whether to convert it myself or what. Thanks VitaminC!
