vip_138
This was an interesting link posted on SDN that i thought i'ld post here. Basically is a test set up to identify which specialties you might be interested in. Not sure how accurate it is but some ppl have been saying that its fairly close to what they thought they'ld like. http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/ mine was: 1 - rads 2 - thoracic surgery 3 - pulmonology (???) Jochi1543
1) Psychiatry 2) Med Oncology 3) Dermatology I am, indeed, interested in psychiatry and dermatology.
Kuantum
1. Radiology 2. Anesthesiology 3. Allergy & Immunology That was kind of fun. I don't think it means much though.
moose
1)urology 2)pathology 3)otolaryngology I'm interested in oto, but the rest are false I think. Family med came out last for me which I do think is very accurate. moose
Kuantum
Family med came last for me too. I think right before that was psychiatry.

Beekeeper
Top 5: 1. occupational med 2. plastic surgery 3. nephrology 4. allergy & immunology 5. infectious disease Bottom 5: 1. pediatrics 2. colon & rectal surgery 3. radiation oncology 4. med oncology 5. family practice Definitely true of the bottom 5 I think but I have NO interest whatsoever in any of the top 5. Especially occupational medicine. Wtf? lol

Guest Mr. Sarcastic
What's an ER Surgeon? A job opening for ME ONLY! haha Nah, just a general surgeon - no sub specialty. That's what I meant... (By the way, I am Genuine.)
UserName
it kinda really gave me the exact opposite of what i want!! things i really wanted came out at the buttom!
j_wald
My top three 1) occupational med 2) aerospace med 3) preventive med I find this pretty funny since at first I really didn't know what these where (especially aerospace medicine???) I looked them up and it turns out that the first two are the sub specialization of preventative medicine. I guess I was consistent at least. The things I am currently most interested in is endocrinology which came in a pretty respectable 9th overall. and the last two where general surgery and family practice which is pretty accurate. Ha ha ha...when I did that test a few years ago I got aerospace medicine too! Never heard of it before. Derm always comes up though I think derm is really gross....I attribute it to my heavily ranking a life outside of medicine. Anyway, the test only tells you how your personality matches to the personalities of those already in the field. It really doesn`t tell you what you are good at or even interested in. But it does give you some food for thought and maybe get you thinking about things you never thought of before!
miss.spoken
top 5: 1 preventive med 2 aerospace med 3 psychiatry 4 pediatrics 5 physical med & rehabilitation bottom five: 32 anesthesiology 33 cardiology 34 general surgery 35 pulmonology 36 nuclear med ...the test knows me well. I'm interested in Peds, Psych, and Epi research. Have negative interest in anesthesiology and surgery.
ducky
This is SO OFF! Top 5 1 plastic surgery 2 neurosurgery 3 pathology 4 physical med & rehabilitation 5 infectious disease Bottom 5 32 nuclear med 33 obstetrics/gynecology 34 anesthesiology 35 med oncology 36 pediatrics Peds and oncology are my personal preferences!!! and if you forced me to, I'd rather do any of my bottom 5 than any of my top 5...this test is nuts! vip_138
not to say this is accurate but remember that this isn't selecting specialties because of your interest in the subject but what you like as far as tasks/life style of the job itself. If it took into account interest in subject i bet it would be more reflective of your preferences.
noncestvrai
Funny I remember doing this test during first year. I think I had like 1)Gen surg 2)Fam med 3)Anesthesia Now, Gen surg is position 25) and fam med is dead last, Anes is pos 6) 1) radiology 2) dermatology 3) nuclear med You would pay me a million I would not do gen surg now, fam med I consider, too bad I did not apply to any programs, anes is still cool but I did not apply. I applied to two of the top three specialties in the current list...=) noncestvrai
Dante
eeew... except for emerg. which i have considered... i guess these are technically all in position #1... Rank Specialty Score 1 radiology 43 2 nuclear med 43 3 gastroenterology 43 4 emergency med 43 but my top 3 scoring ones comprise a list of 16 O_o 33 cardiology 34 34 physical med & rehabilitation 34 35 psychiatry 34 36 general internal med 33 are my bottom scorers... weird since cardiology is one of my interests... as well as internal med... hahaha this list is just all over the place... probably doesn't help that i picked 4 for like 3/4 of the answers ... should probably take it again and actually think a bit more about the questions
dr_2020
My results came out to : 1 dermatology 46 2 emergency med 45 3 general internal med 45 4 radiology 45 5 occupational med 45 16 Neurology 42 - my personal preferrence 32 neurosurgery 39 33 otolaryngology 39 34 pulmonology 38 35 infectious disease 38 36 colon & rectal surgery 36 I'm happy that colon & rectal surgery was at my 'bottom'

0nsp
Cool test. its not too far off I think. Top 6: 1 radiology 47 2 infectious disease 46 3 emergency med 45 4 dermatology 45 5 neurosurgery 45 6 pulmonology 45 Bottom 5: 32 occupational med 38 33 physical med & rehabilitation 36 34 radiation oncology 36 35 med oncology 34 36 family practice 32 For the moment, both ER and rads are at the top of my list, and family is at the bottom, so the list is close. I dunno about neurosurg, although I am interested in physiatry. So there you go.
