Infectious Disease question

Already posted, but thought it might get some play up here at the top...

Hey Dudes,

Looking for some insight into the life of an Infectious Disease specialist. I know that they are often attached to hospitals (dealing with inpatients) and that they do duties in outpatient clinics, but does anyone know if it is possible to practise much like a family physician would, out of their own private office? could one manage chronic ID patients in this context (ie. HIV, hepatitis, STIs)? I am wondering if one in that specialty is at the mercy of finding openings in hospitals and clinics (which could be pretty competitive).

Thanks

Hi Ms. C

Right now I'm working as a research assistant for a infectious diseases specialist. My boss is an HIV expert and he actually doesn't work in hospitals at all. I would say my boss's practice is very much like a family physician. Yes he has his own private office and also attends other clinics in the city as a consultant.

If you think about it it makes sense as most HIV, hepatitis patients these days are in stable condition and while still requireing followup. They don't need to go to the hospital to see a Dr. but they require more than just a gp.

Hope this helps... feel free to pm me if you have more q's.
