GPA considerations

Recommended Posts

I was just looking on the site and it says

"...in each of the last two consecutive years of full time study." for GPA.

I haven't finished my degree so they won't look at 3 out of 4 years, which is what it also says I believe.

I'm just wondering if they do take into account prior years at all? The reason I ask is I failed a course first semester first year and if they do not count first year my GPA is a solid 3.91/4.0 on the OSMAS. If they do count it I will be below the average of the last admitted class (3.7-ish, average was 3.8).

I guess this isn't urgent, I'm not applying until next year, I just want to reassure myself a little, lol.

Thanks a lot for any help

I'm hoping it's only the last two years; however, I'm not sure! I applied to Dal as a non-Maritime applicant. My last two years have a GPA of 3.78. However my overall GPA is much lower, given that I have a few extremely poor years of university from >8 years ago. When I first went to university, I didn't focus on academics, and as such, did not succeed.

I was given one page to explain my previous poor performance. I used that space not to make excuses of past mistakes, but instead highlight how I've improved since then. I'm hoping that working in health care for 8.5 years, and returning to university as a full time student while continuing to work full time, and earning an average of 3.78 during those two years is enough. However, I won't know until possibly January 5. I'll be sure to post here to let you know if I get offered an interview.

Here's hoping!

Elaine

If you apply in your 4th (usually final) year, then they will only be considering years 2 and 3. They will NOT consider year 4 (other than to see that you didn't slack off and fail). If you are applying in your 3rd year, then they will only be considering years 1 and 2. They will NOT consider year 3.

If you apply one or more years after graduation, then they will consider your 3 best years.

As of this point in time, Dalhousie does not really know what to do with graduate GPAs. Since some people have thesis/research only programs, and some have course/lecture only programs Dal does not know how to assess graduate GPAs. Dalhousie takes into consideration that you completed a graduate degree (and whether your GPA was strong or poor), but the GPA is not included in your "GPA calculation".

They will only look at your 2nd+3rd year GPA. You could have all D's in your first year and it wouldn't matter.

They actually do (at least in some situations) combine your graduate degree grades with your undergrad grades. I applied last year and I'm not sure what formula they used but the GPA they gave me was a combination of my undergrad (not as stellar) and grade school (much better) grades.

My program was a more course based program with 4 credits/semester for 3 semesters before doing an internship so this may be why they were able to combine the grades from the 2 programs.

I'm not sure if this will change this year, but I hope not. The current Director / Assistant Dean of Admissions started last year which is when they started (as far as I know) combining the grad school and undergrad grades, I can only assume that they will continue to do this while she is still in that position.
