How do I improve?

Recommended Posts

How can I improve my Reading Comprehension? I have taken all the courses there are but nothing seems to help. I took KAPLAN and a speed reading course. I just can't store info in short term memory atleast thats what I think. Any help at all would be awesome! If you do read journal articles or newspaper, which ones do you read?

I used the Kaplan strategy and it worked for me. Make sure you underline keywords and write down topic sentences next to the paragraph. Try to improve your reading speed, above all. It is impossible to store everything from the passages in your memory, neither is the DAT designed for that purpose. You need to extract only the important information.

okay this may or may not help you and it may come off as rambling, but anyways...

when I wrote the DAT the first time I got a 17. I do admit I didn't really study, all I did was some IQ publication passages, and the passages provided by Kaplan. I did not follow kaplan's method, seeing that writing stuff down was wasting prescious seconds of my time and it really didn't work. Reading the question before hand/skimming through them before reading, was a disaster, as I too have bad memory and I forgot most of the questions. Furthemore, the passages I got were extremely dry, it was so boring, I tried to engage in them but it was useless.

The second time around, all I did was I re-did the IQ publication passages and the passages provided by Kaplan and I took my sister's advice, just read them as if you were reading a newspaper article. I did nothing different and I scored a 20, although nothing to brag about, relatively speaking it was an improvement. BUT I REALLY REALLY REALLY DO BELIEVE THE REASON I DID BETTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND WAS BECAUSE THE PASSAGES WERE NOT SO DRY AND BORING LOL. the passages actually made sense and they weren't on physics like the first time around.

So, did I give you any advice, to most, probably not. But I just decided to share my experience with you all.

So just hope that the passages you get are interesting. People kept telling me oh go read scientific journals but honestly I tried that and since most were unappealing and not to my interest I just stopped reading them.

Another problem I have, as I've mentioned before, is I have pretty shi_tty memory :(

:)
