DAT requirements for UWO - Confused!

Recommended Posts

Under the FAQ section of UWO's webiste they state:

"What are the minimum DAT scores?

As of the admissions cycle which will select the Class of 2011 (entering in September 2007), Schulich Dentistry will be using the Academic Average in its final selection process. This score is based on the scores achieved in the Reading Comprehension, Biology and Chemistry sections of the test. One must meet competitive levels in the Reading Comprehension sectional score in combination with achieving competitive academic grades in order to be invited to an interview. This minimum score on the DAT is subject to change depending on the quality of the applicant pool."

Here's my dilemma my AA is low, however my reading comp is not too bad, I think it's pretty competitive, it's 20. So if I understand correctly to get an interview, if you have a competitive RC score and your top two years are competitive as well, you're guaranteed an interview. After interviews have been conducted, and everyone receives their interview scores (worth 25% of the selection process), then the AA portion of the DAT is looked at in this final selection process. Is this true? or is the AA portion of the DAT and the RC score looked at together, initially??

Also, is it true that after interviews have been conducted, all the applicants are put back into the same pool, and in other words, GPA comes into play again?? Or does GPA only play a role to get you you're interview, and after that your interview score is what gets you in? Judging from the breakdown listed on UWO's webiste, 60% marks, 15% DAT and 25% interview, the former seems to be true. I just need clarification on this matter.

UWO functions on a cut-off system. They have an interview cut off, and if you meet that, you have an interview. I have a feeling they feed your stats into a computer. They are very strict about RC; you can have a 4.0 and miss out on an interview if your RC score does not meet the cut off. Last year it was 18, the year before was a 19. So you are fine.

I think AA does play a part in the interview selection. UWO does not look at carving and PAT, so they only have AA and RC left.

After the interview, GPA still plays an important part because UWO waits for final year marks to come out. Also, people with an honors degree are granted bonus points, as are those with a masters degree.

Anyone have any idea what the range of GPA's UWO has accepted in the past? I know the mean for last year was 84.75% but I'm wondering if the majority of ppl accepted fall within a couple % of that. I'm OOP, sitting at a 81% avg and am wondering if thats too far below the mean to even be considered. If anyone could shed some light on it will get a rating of "AMAZING"

anyone know how to convert GPA into %? im lost with all this % talk. I have a 3.59 but I didn't apply to western because im out of province. only mcgill,u of montreal and u of laval..and to the states.

Use the OMSAS conversion table, I know that's what they use for uoft and UWO dentistry and medicine

well on their website they state that you're a competitive applicant if you have two years over 80% (3.6+). But again it all depends on the applicant pool. I hear if you have a 3.7+ with average DAT scores you'll get an interview. I'm guessing 81% translates to, maybe a 3.6? btw is that your cGPA or your top two years??

If it is your top two years then I think it should be okay, I mean UWO publishes an average, averages aren't really that help because maybe there were some people with really high GPAs and others will lower GPAs.

It's better if they would show the median and mode as opposed to just the average.

What what what?! Is that really how they do it? If that's the case, then wouldn't they need to interview 200+ people?

they invite close to 200, but some ppl just don't come to the interview and use other interview score from other university (due to travel expenses and time conflict)

An average score that got accepted is only an average, they will not release the actual range I don't think.

The final formula is as the OP first post. You can have a good GPA and DAT, but a loudsy interview and not get accepted. Compared to avg GPA and DAT with an amazing interview.

For everyone that gets an interview, your composite score will be relatively close.
