How are references contacted?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how (email, phone, snail mail) and when the adcom will contact our references. I an wondering since one of my references will be out of town for a while but can easily mail/email from where he is but if they initially contact him via snail mail, he will not receive that letter for a long time.

Thanks.

In the past, its snail mail which they must return. "As a result, letters will be sent to referees January 30, 2008 ". They will likely want the letter back by the end of Feb. One of my references was late this last cycle, but it ended up alright. You should probably try to change your reference if things are going to be up in the air.

possibly a stupid question, but how come it says:

The Admissions Committee MAY contact these individuals to verify their reference.

'may contact'? so, wont necessarily contact all 3?

or am i over-analyzing the word.

Make sure the person you put down actually exists, verify this person actually knows you, you actually did the stuff the letter says, that the person actually wrote the letter.. etc.. etc..

I guess it's a check against people that falsify references/credentials? That's my assumption.

They send out a letter by regular mail that is to be returned somewhat promptly but when you go to the interview they will let you know if anything (i.e. references) is outstanding. I bet taht if your reference wasn't in by then it wouldn't impede your admission. But you would need to get it in stat. Kinda silly, you think if you wanted to get in bad enough you would be more responsible with reference choice, haha.
