WillMunny
Hi all, I'm a PGY-2 in Internal Med considering a switch into Rad Onc. Can anyone provide some insight into the employment/staffing picture for Canada? I'm in the east and was told that securing a position within the province after fellowship would be unlikely. Also, what are the Canadian earnings for a new Rad Onc staff? Thanks a lot!
0nsp
I'm still in my clerkship, so my information might not be all that reliable. However, I just completed a rad onc elective, and I heard the same thing from several rad onc residents: they are upset because there will be very few jobs out there for radiation oncologists in a few years. Their job is limited by access to equipment, which present radiation oncologists will be reluctant to give up, therefore a bleak outlook for job prospects. Hope this helps a bit. BlackJack
Hi. I'm wondering: does Rad-Onc face the same problems as Neurosurgery and Cardiac Surgery when it comes to going to the US for work? I know that Canadian Neurosurg and Cardiac Surg residency training is not recognized in the US. Thus, there are a few unemployed Neuro and Cardiac surgeons in Canada, and the market doesn't look like it will improve anytime soon. Does Rad-Onc also face this hindrance? DubZteR
Does Rad-Onc also face this hindrance? from what i know, cad RO training programs are recognized by the ABR so yes a residency programs in RO in canada would be recognized as equivalent in the US. however, the challenge behind finding a job in RO in the US stems from the fact that the market tends to be saturated with US grads already so unless you have US citizenship/perm resident status, I've heard it's going to be hard to get sponsorship for employment. the rationale is that if places can fill the positions with US citizens, why bother spending the money on paperwork for immigration etc ... hope that helps.
