X-Ray Girl
So. Does anyone know what the French assessment involves for NOSM. I heard that one year it was a written essay, and I also heard that one year it was a 5 minute conversation in French just to see if you can actually speak French. Anyone else have any information on this? Or has anyone actually gone through the French assessment?
X-Ray Girl
Thanks...I do qualify for the Francophone stream. I attended a French elementary school and my mother is French. I went to an English high school though and I lost a lot of my French. I can still carry on a conversation in French, but I am a little shy when doing so. Needless to say, I am speaking a lot of french with my mom right now and I will be until March. Thanks for the info.
KMG007
Being from Northern Ontario helps much more then any GPA. If you are a francophone say so...but do not worry if you are not one.
GeezLouise
Hi all, Firstly -- have you guys gotten interview invites from NOSM?? I haven't heard anything and didn't realize that the invites were out.... I had an interview last year (and am hoping for one this year!!) and declared as a francophone. The interview consisted of all those who declared as such to be followed by a NOSM representative volunteer to the "downstairs" (the circuit for the MMI was upstairs) and all sit in a big room around rather large tables. Then, one by one we'd be called into a small room where the students did the interaction with standardized patients (so it was colourful and had a patient examination bed). The gentleman who "tested" me was not a doctor or affiliated with the medical school but I think he was from the university (I interviewed in Sudbury). He asked me who I am and what I do. That was about it, so I just (in about 5 sentences or less) told him what I was up to! Even if I wanted to say more he had cut me off with a "tres bien", and we were already outside the door. What I'm trying to say is that when people say "don't worry, it's easy", I personally wish they would tell me what it was exactly like so I can judge for myself! Hope this is helpful. Some info on me: I am not rural but have worked in Nunavut for a long time...so not Northern Ontario....and I have worked with aboriginal populations in urban settings. PS> I can't find it now, but I encourage you to look on their website http://www.normed.ca because they actually have a ranking of who they accept and how. For example, aboriginal is number one, northern ontarian who is francophone is #2, northern ontario is #3, francophone is #4, etc etc until you get to your fully urbanized candidate. It lists them in some sort of order as a guideline...can't find it now but definitely came across it when preparing last year.
X-Ray Girl
Thanks Geezlouise No the invites are not out yet. I interviewed last year as well and if I remember correctly, the invites came around February 5th. We should be hearing something soon. Thank you very much for the information on the French assessment. Like you said, it is kind of nice knowing what you are going to be asked to do during the interview. Good Luck Everyone!! Doc2011
My interview was in TBay last year and I was admitted... The french portion was relatively simple... we were asked to convene to an area and about 3-4 interviewers took us one by one in a private room and just asked to chat for a minute or two about the weather and all that! Nothing to stress about!
