Preparation for program

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just this crossed my mind the other day, not meant as a discourager at all but something that you should be thinking of when considering NOSM. There are multiple placements at NOSM, which are amazing learning experiences, but with same come the challenges of constantly moving and being away from your family. I just wanted to throw this out so you are all prepared to be away for a month in first year, two months in second year, eight months in third year and potentially another 4 months in fourth year. The first three years of moving are not optional. There is no guarantee that your placements will be close to your home campus. I know that NOSM attracts a lot of mature students, who have husbands/wives and kids, so feel that this commitment of moving frequently is something that needs to be discussed pre-med school rather than have the crisis once you are in.

Best of Luck!

Hey thanks for the post. I personally have nothing keeping me here in Sudbury. I think that the placements away from Sudbury are great because Sudbury (or Thunder Bay) do not exactly represent a rural or remote area of Northern Ontario. It is definitely something that those with families should discuss before applying to NOSM.

Its nice to see some movement on the NOSM front wrt posts.

I guess we should be hearing about interviews shortly. If I remember correctly it was Feb 5th last year.;)

:) yeah girlfriend maybe for sure... it is important say if you have three kids under six! :)

I'm crossing my fingers for Northern. I am not a northern resident, but have spent my summers and Christmases up there for the last four years with my partner. I'm hoping I get it because most likely he will be matched for his residency program to either Sudbury or Thunder Bay.
