med2012
I was wondering how long you have to read a question and think about it before you start talking. It says in the interview package you have a couple of minutes, but I want to know exactly how long we have so I can practice. Also, I heard some rumours regarding an essay that you have to write at the end of the day. How much is the essay worth post-interview and what is it about? Nothing about the essay is mentioned in the interview package tho!
Beekeeper
You have two minutes to read the question before you enter the room. I know nothing about the essay you have mentioned and I am almost positive this is exactly what you had said - a rumour. Perhaps someone else can confirm this. GeezLouise
Med2012, Beekeeper, There was an essay interviews of 2005 and prior, but I believe they have since removed it. My friend interviewed at Mac that year and told me about it (and the logistical nightmare that it was). My sister did her interview last year and there was no such thing. I doubt they'd reinstitute it...
Orchid
I think there may be a school out west (calgary?) that does MMI and then an essay at the end... ? or maybe just some school out west that does essay at their interview and I could be getting confused. but for mcmaster, definitely no essay... just the MMI

So two minutes in total to read the question+think about the answer? Awesome:o

premed90210
are we allowed to bring paper and pen to plan our answers?

I believe that's true but the 2 minutes seems like forever, I doubt you will need to stay beyond that.
Dal07
are we allowed to bring paper and pen to plan our answers? At Dal we weren't allowed to. You really don't need it though - it's not a structured essay. Most of the time it just felt like a conversation
jenny
I did the MMI last year and I found as did most people that 2 minutes is more that enough time to read the question and think about it, it doesn't seem long enough but it is...try it. The questions were generally pretty short no longer than a small paragraph in legnth.
rnumt
I did the MMI at Dal this year and the two minutes were more than enough. Actually, I think the worst part was the anticipation of going into the next room and then hearing this awful buzzer (I had nightmares about the buzzer for days afterwards) that beckoned you to go in. Other than that, it was sufficiently painless.
nitac
I have a question about interview day - What is the decorum for bringing a purse/coat/folder with paper and pen with you on interview day? I have a couple days left until mine ... soooooo nervous! I only applied at one school, so it is a one shot deal
Hall&Oates
Well, I'm in the same boat. Mac or bust. And this is my fourth time trying! So it will be this or Grenada for me. As for the interview day, I'm just bringing a piece of paper with some MMI interview tips on the front and "Relax, it's too late to change anything now" on the backside. I'm not even going to wear a watch because I get distracted easily and I just want to have one train of thought when I walk into those rooms without having to keep thinking "Was that 5 minutes or 6 minutes". I think we are all going to have a lot of fun once we hear the buzzer!
nitac
Haha - that's a good idea with the paper telling you to relax. For me it is Mac or Ireland ... so finger's crossed for Mac! Hopefully I don't mess it up completely!
Hall&Oates
Yep, I applied to UCD and Trinity in Ireland as well... I just haven't heard back from them yet. Sigh... Anyhoo, don't forget to bring your passport-size photo with you tomorrow, everyone!
biogirl
Does anyone know if we can bring a purse/where we would put it?
Nishi
I think if you bring a purse you're expected to leave it with your jacket. I'm not sure you're allowed to carry anything during the MMI as I did not see anyone, myself included, holding onto a purse during the interview. mbene085
You can bring a purse. There's a rack by the coats for purses/bags/personal effects. Didn't see anybody toting one around, though. People had a hard enough time remembering to bring their stickers to the next room, you wouldn't want to have to worry about a bag too. I ended up carrying a piece of paper (that was given as part of an exercise) to two stations down the line before I even realized it was in my hand

7kkww
Oh yeah, Mcmaster should definitely post their videos online. I laughed so hard yesterday i cried! How did everyone think they did on the MMI so far?
Beekeeper
Those videos were so great! I especially loved the 'Mac vs. Traditional Medical School' and the ninjas. As for the MMI, I feel pretty good overall about my performance but am trying not to read too much into it. We'll just have to see come May! med2012
yeah, I was stuttering horribly during my first three stations. Hopefully my performance on the others was good enough to get me in!
