Dr. Happy Hippo
Hi All! My very first post.
Soho
Taken from: http://www.facmed.utoronto.ca/education/md/admissions/0809/Academic_Qualifications/MCAT.htm "Minimum scores of 9 in each section and N on the writing sample are required of all applicants." The graduate policy says they consider MCAT scores so that 6 might get flagged and put you out of the running. You've got a great research record though, if you don't get in this year, re-write it and try again! The pre-med treadmill... always the feeling of going forwards with none of the movement. Good luck!
JohnDakota
Ya the 6 will get flagged. The great thing about U of T is that they look at the whole package, and your publications will help you out a lot. Most masters students come out with 2 publications if they're lucky. You with 3 already under your belt are in a great position to demonstrate those first 2 years were the blip.
Jixe
I think that the odds are slim to none. UofT is hard... even with their fair assessment in place for grad students, it is still stiff competition. Sorry, but I think you knew that already. For real, UofT is usually everyone's first choice. Cobey
I know that anecdotal advice about friends (or friends of friends) is not always so helpful, but I do have some news that could cheer you up. A CLOSE FRIEND of mine got into UofT meds last year (she's in 1st year now). It was her 3rd time applying. She did a clinical masters, and either had zero or 1 publication, I forget. She had a 7 in verbal reasoning, which is what killed her at most other schools. Her undergrad marks were average, and she did well in her Masters courses. I don't know if this helps, but I thought I would throw it out there.
Guest viscous
what about my 13 PS, 11 BS, 8 VR and Q on WS along with a 3.6ish OMSAS gpa with last 2 years clicking in above 3.85gpa. Weighting formula would not be applied to me. I applied in my 3rd year. What if I pull another 3.9 in 4th year and apply this sept again at UofT, would my chances increase? I have great research experience both in sciences and humanities. other regular ECs.
Dante
I remember reading on these boards last year that the 9/9/9 mcat cutoff became firm last year for undergrads, so anything below that would be autorejected unless you're a grad student. sorry viscous... your gpa also isn't helping you much either. From the sound of it, you had a bad first year... so keep up the hard work. While acing or doing amazingly well in years 2-4 may not even get you an interview at UofT, they will get you quite far with most of the other universities... and if you qualify for the weighting formula in 4th year, then you could have a great gpa for UofT as well. Good Luck!
Jochi1543
I have now done a 2-years masters which is very clinical, have 3 papers and 18 abstracts with 7 scholarships. Wow! Impressive. I would consider rewriting the MCAT and applying MD/PhD, you may have better luck via that route...and it might fit your interests/talents better, too. Guest viscous
Thanks for giving some hope alpine. I admit that I have crappy cgpa compared to all premeds here, but hey, as soon as I came to Canada, I started my uni. As a new immigrant you have tons of problems to face from physical to mental dimensions including economic problems. My 2nd and 3rd year marks clearly show my astounding adaptation to the Canadian system of education and hopefully my 4th year marks will depict the compounding of that adaptation and integration into a new society, ready to take the role of a physician serving the local population. I hope to make it through....God willing.
Jewels1986
I'm fairly sure (though not positive) that a friend of mine who's in first year at U of T this year was below the cut-off in one section - I'm not sure whether her score was 7 or 8, but I don't think it was a 9. She was surprised to be accepted, so I think you'd definitely have a chance!

I think we only have approx 10 3rd year students in our class.
