Thoughts on the the Session?

Recommended Posts

So what did everyone think of the session? I know I was screaming "ask about the written answer!" at my computer from the time the MMI Dr. finished speaking up until when the girl answered. Personally I would've liked to have seen more example questions for the MMI. Something somebody should've asked is how the autobiographical stuff on the Oct forms will be evaluated. Other than that I think the session was adequate in information.

I ended up missing the info session as I was forced out for dinner today  . I was wondering if you (anyone) could answer a few questions for me? Keith you said you wished there were more examples of mmi questions, did they give any examples (if so what were they just so I can get an idea)? Also, what info (if any) did they give about the written station. Finally, is the 2 minute break when we read the next scenario/question or is the scenario given verbally once we enter the next station? If theres any other important info I missed I would really appreciate it. Thanks for helping me out :) .

To hopefully help you out, they didn't mention any information about what the writing station may entail (but it will only be 8 minutes, can't be too in depth). What was given as an example of an MMI question was one that McMaster has previously published. It has to do with an ethical dilemma, a doctor prescribes homeopathic medicine to a patient even though he does not believe this medication will have any benefit etc, so you are given 2 minutes to read it (the question is posted in the room as well) and discuss the issues surrounding the physician's behaviour. Another applicant asked if you might encounter a straight "Why do you want to be a doctor?" question and he was told that this is a possibility as well. Also, apparently the questions are randomly selected and won't be the same for different cycles *but they will have the same types of questions (ie ethical, autobiographical etc...). Nothing else really stands out from the presentation to me, hope this helps.

I managed to get most of the session recorded (save the first 25 mins) so if anyone wants it feel free to message me.

I'm happy with the depth of the discussion and the presentations were awesome IMO esp Nicole's.

One of the things that really appealed to me was all the community work that U of M is involved in...previously I thought that many med students were too busy to do much volunteer work but I'm glad that's not the case. Also I was totally psyched out by the fact that they had ART exhibitions held by students. =P

Nyways, good luck with the prep and see you guys there~

The admissions office told me that they are working on uploading the presentation for those of us that missed the live broadcast. It should be up on the admissions page soon (and the timeline of "soon" wasn't specified:P)

Hey has anyone gotten a reply about when this would happen? I've sent a couple of emails but there hasn't been a response yet.

Thanks.

During the final question period one of the people at the front mentioned that it would be along the lines of, 'why do you want to be a doctor?' Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than 10 mins as everyone can write at once and they dont need to have interviewers actually interviewing.

"Why would you NOT want to be a doctor?"

Brilliant!!

Because of:

-possible legal problems-everything from medical malpractice to allegations of overcharging be they accurate or not(I believe this lead one Ontario physician to commit suicide)

-diseases inadvertantly picked up from hospitals

-long hours and demanding schedule (family life may suffer)

-long timeline for education and high tuition rates

-emotional burden from constantly seeing suffering and death (depends on what specialty you're in-ex. geriatric, psychiatric, cancer)

-large amount of responsibility when dealing with the welfare of other human beings

That being said...medicine is my career goal. The pluses, in my mind, outweigh the minuses. =)
