cowens
so, i didn't get an interview this year and will therefore apply next year. i, would like to strengthen my application, of course. i'm finished school so trying to up my gpa isn't doable. i've wrote the mcat twice already and didn't do so well [i was working and a full time student when i wrote it] - i got a 29S. should i write it again? i'm working now, but it's a pretty slack job, so i know that i would be able to score a nice bit higher. but, would it look bad writing it a third time? also, i'm working in the middle east. therefore my volunteering opportunities are pretty much nil [hospitals and clinics generally don't have volunteers and if they do, they're arabic speakers]. what can i do with regard to increasing my ecs? advice? thanks. cowens
breakdown was 9 bio, 10 physical and 10 verbal. first time i took it, it was 8, 8, 10 R. i know there are people at memorial [where i applied] right now with a considerably lower score on the mcat, but i thought that if i did it again and scored higher that it would counteract my crappy undergrad gpa [only 3.2 - though i have a masters in counselling psychology with a 4.0]
Dal07
You could re-write it, but I don't know if it will counteract your gpa ... mun doesn't seem to place much emphasis on the mcat for in-province applicants. most of my friends going to mun had <30, and when my best friend applied last year with a 24, they told her that score was 'competative enough' for in-province (but she still didn't get in, even with a very high gpa and a BUNCH of ec's ... and when asked how to improve her application, she was told that everything looked great and it all came down to who reviewed her application). cowens
i interviewed with mun last year and was told that the mcat was competive, that i had great ecs and great reference letters [inclunding one from the associate dean of medicine] and she even reviewed my interview notes [got almost all 5s on a scale of 1-5 and she read some on the comments and said that they had nothing negative to say]. she then said that i had been on 'the cusp' of being offered, but that my undergrad gpa was why they didn't [given a competitive bunch of apps]. this year i didn't even get an interview [though i also know someone who was waitlisted last year and didn't get an interview this year either] guess they had some pretty impressive apps this year. there's nothing i can do about the undergrad gpa. i'm just grasping at straws and trying to figure out how to improve the app for next year. and as i said, living in the middle east i have no idea how i could increase my ecs, which just leaves the mcat. [though i do know that the 29S is still competitive] crappy pappy!
