futuredoc
Hey everybody, I was just wondering, do any Canadian med schools require/desire some sort of biochemistry course? If so, do they need it to be full year? Course registration here at Dal is starting real soon, and it is driving me nuts trying to find the answer . The Law
I'm not 100% sure, but I think UBC requires 1/2 a course in biochem.
Inspired17
I'm not 100% sure, but I think UBC requires 1/2 a course in biochem. Actually, I think that UBC requires one full year of biochemistry. I actually have 1 biochemistry course (half year) & decided not to apply to UBC because they said that I would need another biochemistry course to fulfill the prerequisites (info gathered through email communication). I think that this is also stipulated somewhere on their website.
futuredoc
Does that mean that only UBC requires biochemistry? That would the best thing ever . PS That was a crazy fast response!
The Law
Hmm, I'm not really familliar with the other schools out West (Man, U of A, U of C)... so I'd double check to make sure with those. In Ontario, none of the schools specifically require biochem that I know of. ps... I'm superman, hence my fast reply
Julie
Ottawa requires 2 full yr courses out of biochem, orgo & general chem. I think Sherbrooke requires biochem, but not 100% sure... So there are others beside UBC. I think this has been discussed in previous threads, you can find individual reqs under each school section. futuredoc
I don't think that schools out west (except for UBC) require biochemistry. It should definitely make 2nd year much easier. Anybody applying to med in third year?
vip_138
Manitoba requires 1 full year biochem and you can't drop your biochem mark from the gpa weighting they apply.
futuredoc
True, but I think Manitoba and Sherbrook are pretty reluctant in offering OOP seats (I'm from Nova Scotia), so I doubt there would be much need to worry about that. futuredoc
That's true, I apologize. I was just thinking that they would have people with extremely high GPAs and whatnot applying (I hear Saskatchewan has a 90% "minimum for OOP). Jochi1543
I know that when I got into med school (1999, ack!), U of A required biochem. I can't remember if it was a half-year or full-year course... I was a biochem major, so it didn't matter to me. Yeah, it does, one semester. Altho I think they "suggest" a year. Jochi1543
Yeah, 90.6 this year. Too bad for me with my 90.0 What do they do for people whose schools don't have a % scale?

Manitoba emphasizes the MCAT way more than GPA. If you get an interview, you have a good chance at being accepted. Their OOP waitlist moves a lot. Some US schools also require biochemistry...something to keep in mind in case you consider applying to the US in the future.
futuredoc
If I apply during third year (which is when I plan to take biochemistry so I won't have a mark on it), will the med schools still accept me (that is, the prerequisites) ? What about calculus (same scenario as biochem)?

What about calculus (same scenario as biochem)? I don't know about other schools, but Ottawa will (unless something changes before then). You can take the pre-reqs during the fall or winter semester of the yr you apply, just not in the summer prior to starting med school.
kwasko@dal.ca
The U of S requires one full year of biochemistry.
